Just a heads-up – if you haven’t seen the latest episode of Shifting Gears, Season 2’s “Scary,” be warned, I’m about to talk about it! I highly recommend watching it first on Hulu – you’ll need a subscription – because I don’t want to ruin anything for you. Proceed with caution if you haven’t seen it yet!
Season 2 of Shifting Gears is moving quickly, and the recent episodes have included a lot of guest appearances and nods to older TV shows. Many of these references connect to the work of Tim Allen, so it was great to see Kat Dennings featured as well.
While Dennings hasn’t appeared in as many TV shows as her more experienced colleague, the series cleverly acknowledged her earlier work. The recent episode, “Scary,” specifically paid tribute to the CBS sitcom that first made her well-known.

Shifting Gears Made A 2 Broke Girls Reference
Riley ran into Gabe, Stitch, and Amelie at a bar on Halloween. She quickly discovered that people didn’t quite understand her “Mama Bear” costume. Meanwhile, Stitch struck up a conversation with two women who were dressed exactly like Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs’ characters from the show 2 Broke Girls, complete with Williamsburg Diner uniforms.
While it’s not the same as seeing Beth Behrs actually appear on the show, and with The Neighborhood wrapping up, that might be possible down the line, it’s still fun to see a reference to her popular CBS series. Hopefully, we’ll see more moments like this in the future.

Tim Allen’s Past Shows Have Already Gotten A Nod In Shifting Gears Season 2
As we’ve seen, Shifting Gears has already included nods to Tim Allen’s previous work and featured stars from both Last Man Standing and Home Improvement in the season two premiere. This season has also had a lot of celebrity appearances, with guests ranging from athletes like Mookie Betts to former talk show host Lilly Singh on the ABC comedy.

Shifting Gears Fixed My Biggest Problem With Season 2 Thus Far With A Big Change For Riley
Given how many of Tim Allen’s friends are guest starring, I’m curious if Kat Dennings and Disney will bring in actors from past and future Marvel films. It’s easy to remember her work in the Thor movies, and it would be fun to see some of those characters show up. Though, getting Chris Hemsworth or Natalie Portman on a primetime ABC show might be wishful thinking.
I’m really hoping the show’s writers are already planning to include more details about Kat Dennings’ career in future episodes. The recent reference to 2 Broke Girls was fun, and maybe it’s a hint of even bigger things to come! I’d be thrilled if they did, but honestly, I’m just enjoying watching the show unfold right now.
You can watch Shifting Gears on ABC every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. I’m really liking where Season 2 is going, but I’m starting to think some big conflicts might be coming, especially now that Amelie is questioning her friendship with Gabe.
