This year has seen a rise in anime with serious and often grim storylines, and several have been particularly well-received. The Summer season was especially notable for its darker themes, with Crunchyroll releasing one of its most depressing shows yet, *Takopi’s Original Sin*, alongside the similarly intense shonen series, *Gachiakuta*. While the Fall season hasn’t had many new dark anime, it’s been surprising to see *Spy x Family*, usually a lighthearted comedy, take a much more serious direction. The first two seasons, produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks, were known for their humor with occasional action sequences.
Despite its generally cheerful feel, *Spy x Family* has always been based on a serious situation. The story centers around Loid Forger, a spy, who must create a fake family and forge connections with another country to stop a war. This arrangement always felt unstable, like it could fall apart. Now, Season 3 is finally revealing Loid’s backstory, something fans have been eager to see. As a result, the anime’s mood has changed significantly, moving from a light comedy to what might be one of the most intense and dramatic shows of the year.
Spy x Family Shifts Its Lighthearted Tone into One of the Darkest Anime of This Year

Episode 2 of *Spy x Family* Season 3 starts to reveal Twilight’s backstory. While viewers expected a more serious feel, the episode surprisingly drops the funny moments the show is famous for. Throughout the series so far, *Spy x Family* has always mixed its stories with comedy. But as Loid’s past is explored, the episode focuses on darker, more realistic scenes, fitting for a story that touches on the harshness of war.
We’re learning more about Loid’s past, including his childhood dream of becoming a soldier. A recent flashback revealed his hometown was attacked, and several children he knew were killed in a bombing – a scene depicted as the place where he and his friends used to play. This traumatic event seems to be the reason behind Loid’s incredible skills and how he became a top spy. But his story isn’t finished yet; the next episode preview hints at more revelations about his past. The preview suggests a consistently dark tone, showing Loid in several difficult situations. If the series maintains this level of darkness, *Spy x Family* could become one of the most emotionally intense anime of the year.
I’m really curious to see *Spy x Family* heading into some seriously intense and darker storylines. What are your thoughts? I’d love to hear them – feel free to share your opinions and join the discussion over at the ComicBook Forum!
