A recent report about the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, has shed light on an important detail regarding Doctor Doom – specifically, his mask. The report explains how the filmmakers chose to portray the mask and what that choice reveals about the character’s overall presentation in the story.
MCU Heroes may not see Doctor Doom without his mask
I just heard from a reliable source, @MyTimeToShineHello, and it’s fascinating! Apparently, even though we might get a quick glimpse of Doctor Doom’s face revealing a resemblance to Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ none of the characters within the movie ever realize it. They don’t connect the dots, so the secret stays with us, the audience!
Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom avoids confusion with his previous role as Iron Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This choice sparked rumors that Doom might be a version of Iron Man from another reality.
Just to clarify, fans will get a brief look at the character without his mask in the Doomsday film, but the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t see his unmasked face.
Doctor Doom consistently wears his mask, just like in the comics. This is because his face is badly scarred, and he’s very concerned with his appearance. Even when he becomes incredibly powerful – gaining almost god-like abilities during events like Secret Wars – he continues to hide his face. Only when Mister Fantastic alters reality is Doom’s face temporarily restored.
There’s still a lot of discussion about whether the ‘Secret Wars’ storyline will explain why Doctor Doom looks so much like Iron Man, but Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything. The story currently keeps Doom’s face covered to maintain the mystery and prevent heroes from immediately figuring out who he really is or how he might be connected to other universes.
The movie hints that Doom might be secretly controlling the Avengers by disguising himself. He seems to be using a face similar to Tony Stark’s, but this plan would fall apart if the heroes realized who he really is. While Robert Downey Jr.’s face will be shown briefly, he spends most of the film masked.
Robert Downey Jr. taking on multiple roles isn’t entirely new. As The Cosmic Circus pointed out, similar to how Chris Evans portrays different characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite looking the same, Robert Downey Jr. could also play Victor Von Doom.
