Since it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, there’s been speculation about his connection to Tony Stark’s Iron Man character. A recent theory might just offer a satisfying explanation for this connection. Over the years, from 2008’s Iron Man to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. played the role of genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark. After a break and following his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, he is back in the MCU after making an unacknowledged appearance as Doctor Doom in the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
It’s uncertain how Marvel Studios will justify Victor Von Doom appearing similar to Tony Stark when he reappears in the 2026 film, “Avengers: Doomsday.” A theory proposed on Reddit might offer an explanation, and possibly revamp Doctor Doom’s well-known scarred appearance from the comics. The hypothesis suggests that Doctor Doom could be a different version of Tony Stark from another universe who sustained injuries while using the Infinity Stones to vanquish Thanos and his forces in “Endgame,” but managed to survive these wounds without succumbing to them.

In the Marvel universe, Victor Von Doom’s distinctive scars have a haunting backstory that is deeply intertwined with his enduring feud against Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, of the Fantastic Four. The “Origin of Doctor Doom!” storyline, featured in Fantastic Four Annual #2 from 1964, delves into this background, revealing that their first encounter occurred at an American university where they were both students. During this time, Doom was working on a device intended to communicate with his deceased mother, while Richards cautioned him about incorrect calculations. Ignoring the advice, Doom proceeded with the experiment, but the device exploded, leaving him disfigured.
Wearing the metal mask and green cloak he’s known for becomes a permanent fixture for Doctor Doom following this event, as seen at the end of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. The presence of his mask in “First Steps” implies that he bears scars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like the original lore. This suggests that the conflict between him and Mister Fantastic began the same way on Earth-828. However, a theory posits that Doom might have obtained these scars by preventing the Mad Titan’s destructive rampage instead of just trying to contact his departed mother. Such an alteration in Doom’s backstory could significantly reshape his character within the MCU.
In a fresh twist, this novel concept suggests that Dr. Doom might exhibit heroic tendencies within the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), possibly leading him to construct Battleworld and rescue numerous characters following the devastation of the multiverse due to incursions. This narrative arc is anticipated to unfold in the films “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” with Downey Jr.’s Dr. Doom taking center stage, and these movies are expected to address why his appearance mirrors Tony Stark’s. The “Secret Wars” series will cap off the Multiverse Saga and create a unified timeline for the MCU, however, it appears that Doctor Doom will play a significant part in the franchise for quite some time.
