Enthusiasts of the timeless masterpiece, “Fist of the North Star“, were undeniably thrilled when news of the anime remake broke out. However, the initial excitement seems to have given way to apprehension as the release date draws near. Fingers crossed that the final product surpasses fans’ initial impressions, but regrettably, there remains a significant chance that the highly-anticipated 40-year anniversary project might not be well-received. At this year’s Anime Expo, one of the highly anticipated announcements was the unveiling of a remake for Burunson and Tetsuo Hara’s manga. A promotional video for it was also shared. However, the quality of animation and its somewhat rigid appearance didn’t meet expectations, causing long-time fans to express frustration and disappointment. The excitement stemmed from the anticipation of a faithful adaptation of the original storyline, but while that aspect remains promising, it appears that the animation might hinder the appeal of this remake.

The Apocalyptic Hit’s Remake Might Not Live Up To Expectations

Currently, no details have been shared about which studio will be responsible for the animation or who the director might be. The primary concern among fans regarding the trailer is that the 3D computer-generated imagery (CGI) appears rather rigid. Historically, CGI has had a reputation for producing poor and uninspiring quality, as seen in adaptations like Berserk (2016), Kingdom, and Ex-Arm. However, over the past decade, the technology behind CGI animation has significantly improved. Anime such as Trigun Stampede, Land of the Lustrous, and Girls Band Cry are prime examples of this advancement, with stunning visuals and impressive animation even in the CGI format.

Despite boasting advanced CG animation, the preliminary trailer for “Fist of the North Star” falls short of exceptional standards. Although it’s impressive, the graphic violence lacks the prior censorship, and some sequences are commendable. However, the overall visual aesthetic leaves fans unenthusiastic about the anime. The creators have promised to utilize cutting-edge technology, but the final product was unexpectedly underwhelming.
