Launched in 2014, Shueisha’s digital manga platform, Shonen Jump+, has become home to many popular series like Dandadan, Spy x Family, and Kaiju No. 8. The ‘shonen’ demographic is incredibly competitive, and with manga becoming increasingly digital, new titles are released constantly. Unfortunately, not every series succeeds, and publishers often cancel those that aren’t profitable. 2025 has seen a surprising number of cancellations on Shonen Jump+, though many of these are limited to Japan. The latest series to be discontinued is Shinewbi, a sci-fi romance by Asako Mabuchi and Kohei Ando.
I saw the news on X (formerly Twitter) from @WSJ_manga, a source I trust for updates on Shonen Jump series. Apparently, the manga, which started in February, will finish with chapter 22. They haven’t announced the exact release date for that final chapter yet, but since it’s published every two weeks, it should be out before the year ends. This isn’t the first time these creators have worked together – back in 2022, they released Teruteru Construction Co. Ltd. on the same platform. That manga also had just 24 chapters, but it didn’t get a lot of attention, so there isn’t much information about it available.
What Is the Plot of Shinewbi?

The story follows Rio Mikazuki, a modern ninja—called a Shinewbi—who works as a police officer. Unlike ninjas of the past, Shinewbi use high-tech gadgets like invisibility cloaks, special shoes for quiet and agile movement, and drones to track and fight enemies. While these tools should simplify their work, Rio’s older colleague, Hajime Igarashi, struggles with technology and frequently needs Rio’s help to operate them.
Hajime struggles with machines because he’s a traditional Shinobi – one of the last of his kind who practices the ancient art of Ninjutsu. Ninjutsu isn’t like using modern technology; it’s a difficult skill that requires intense training, almost like magic. Despite being capable of mastering it, Hajime finds Ninjutsu uninteresting and prefers to depend on modern technology instead.
Rio has always been captivated by Ninjutsu and constantly tries to persuade Hajime to use it. When he finally does, she’s more intrigued than ever, even after learning about the technique’s downsides. Despite seeing one of his abilities, she’s eager to see more. Throughout the story, Rio and Hajime work together to protect their town, each relying on very different powers.
