A new manga series in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine may have avoided cancellation thanks to a timely and exciting new character transformation. Competition is fierce in the weekly magazine, and any series can be cut short, even if the creator wants to continue. This year, with Shueisha actively looking for its next breakout hit, a series’ success or failure can hinge on just one week and how well it connects with fans.
Following the cancellation of Jun Furukawa’s Kaedegami recently, Shueisha is preparing for more series to end this Fall, and fans are speculating which newer manga might be next. Many international fans thought Otr of the Flame was at risk of early cancellation, but the manga may have avoided that fate by introducing a new, powerful form for its main character at the climax of its latest fight.
Otr of the Flame Goes Berserk With Mysterious New Form

Yuki Kawaguchi, the creator of Otr of the Flame, has experienced a series cancellation before with their previous work, The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood, which ended before reaching 20 chapters. That series appeared to be rushing towards its conclusion, quickly wrapping up the final fight and revealing more of its world. However, Otr of the Flame doesn’t seem to be facing the same fate. Not only did it recently finish a major battle, but the newest chapter also hinted at what’s coming up next in a brand new story arc.
The story seemed to be heading towards a pause when a surprising development occurred with Otr of the Flame. Throughout the series, Otr has worked alongside the Flame Spirit, Fylga, but Fylga suddenly took complete control of Otr’s body, revealing a darker, more sinister appearance. This nearly killed Otr and hinted that this demonic form is actually Fylga’s true self. Now that Fylga has lost their memory, this powerful, uncontrolled state appears to be a preview of what’s to come in the story.
Will Otr of the Flame Be Cancelled?

I was so hyped when Otr of the Flame began! The power system was incredible and made me imagine these epic battles. Honestly, it felt like it struggled to really grab people at first, but things are finally clicking with the fight against the Wicked Horn. We’re now seeing Spirits being used in cool ways, different applications of Heroic Vigor, and getting a much better sense of the larger world – it’s everything I was hoping for!
The series is still at risk of cancellation. Shonen Jump has shown they’re willing to end a series even after a year, sometimes even after it’s gotten an anime adaptation. So, Otr of the Flame needs to perform well to avoid that fate. While the series has potential, it won’t matter if the editors at Shueisha don’t believe it can succeed. Hopefully, the introduction of exciting new forms will give this fantasy action series the chance it needs.
