Today isn’t a great day for Shrek fans, as they’ve learned that the release of the fifth movie featuring their favorite animated ogre has been pushed back another six months.
In a change from the initial plan, Shrek 5, the latest installment in the main series since Shrek Forever After in 2010, is now scheduled to hit theaters on June 30th, 2027 instead of December 23rd, 2026. This means fans have to wait a bit longer with about two years still left before its release.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I must admit, the anticipated 2025 release of Eddie Murphy’s new movie, which he hinted at last summer, seems to be a distant dream now. Coincidentally, it was around that time when the film’s official announcement graced our screens.
Five months ago, we began working on what appears to be Shrek 5. I was responsible for recording the initial act, and we plan to complete it this year. While talking to Deadline, he mentioned that the release is tentatively scheduled for 2025.
In the upcoming movie, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are set to reprise their beloved roles as Shrek, Princess Fiona, and Donkey respectively. Notably, Zendaya has joined the voice cast, portraying the role of Shrek and Fiona’s daughter named Felicia.
An explanation hasn’t been provided by Universal yet as to why the latest delay occurred, but fans can only hope that this additional time allows the animators to create a sequel worthy of the 17-year anticipation.
This upcoming movie is helmed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, both of whom have played significant roles in earlier installments of this series. A sneak peek, or trailer, was unveiled as early as February, offering a glimpse into the film’s anticipated content.
Even though Shrek himself hasn’t appeared in a movie for quite some time, the Shrek franchise hasn’t disappeared from the scene completely. In fact, Antonio Banderas reprised his role as the title character in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which received high praise, and was released in 2022.
Although specific plot details for the upcoming movie are currently scarce, there have been unverified whispers hinting at a possible scenario where our beloved characters might venture out of their fairytale realm and explore the human world. However, it’s advisable to approach this speculation with a bit of skepticism until official confirmation arrives.
With Zendaya taking on the role, it appears probable that the dynamic between Shrek and his daughter, Felicia, might serve as the main storyline in the movie. We’re eagerly waiting for further specific updates on this project over the coming weeks and months.
