The upcoming release, referred to as Silent Hill f, is widely anticipated as Konami’s significant comeback to the survival horror genre following the triumph of the remake for Silent Hill 2 last year. In a recent conversation, author Ryukishi07, renowned for his work on the horror series Higurashi When They Cry, has likened the supernatural and psychological aspects of Silent Hill f to salad dressing. During a joint appearance with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07, as reported by Famitsu (via Automaton), stated that players may struggle to distinguish between the psychological and supernatural terror themes within the game.
Essentially, he pointed out that this particular work deviates from his standard approach in storytelling. Unlike his usual method of weaving multiple themes into a narrative, Ryukishi07 concentrated on one primary theme as the foundation for the entire plot. Employing his “salad dressing” analogy, he suggested that supernatural and psychological aspects would serve as unique components within this narrative, much like oil and vinegar in a salad dressing. He didn’t elaborate extensively, but it seems that players may struggle to discern the supernatural elements of the game from the psychological horror lurking in the shadows.
In contrast to several games from the Silent Hill series, which incorporate supernatural elements such as cults and malevolent deities (as seen in Silent Hill 1 and 3), Silent Hill 2 primarily delved into psychological terror. The horrors that protagonist James Sutherland encountered were largely about confronting his own past traumas, with the town of Silent Hill itself serving as a catalyst for this introspection. Interestingly, even the game’s antagonists were crafted to reflect James’ inner demons. Ryukishi07’s “salad dressing” metaphor suggests that the narrative will seamlessly blend these two types of horror, potentially leaving players questioning their reality even more.
Previously in June, Ryukishi07 mentioned that the game’s main topics would encompass areas unexplored by the franchise. At the same gathering, Albert Lee from NeoBards, as well as Motoi Okamura, a series producer at Konami, discussed their extensive brainstorming sessions to bring the Showa Era town Ebisugaoka to reality in the game. The choice to place the town in 1960s Japan was also part of these discussions, as the studio aimed to provide players with a setting that would feel both familiar and unfamiliar.
At Anime Expo 2025, Konami unveiled the opening of Silent Hill f. Those present were able to record the event and what they saw was a video featuring protagonist Hinako conversing with a doll. Her sister, seen in the opening, wore traditional Japanese attire called a yukata. The presentation held an air of mystery as several aspects remained unclear, such as the fact that the sister’s face was never visible in the footage.
The game titled “Silent Hill f” is set to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25th. If you opt for the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll have the chance to start playing it three days prior to its official release date.
