During a recent question-and-answer session with investors, horror game company Bloober Team revealed they’ve begun development on a remake of the classic Silent Hill. This news surfaced when an investor inquired about the studio’s upcoming projects following the launch of Cronos: The New Dawn.
In addition to beginning development on the Silent Hill remake, Bloober Team announced that one of its teams is currently handling five separate projects. These projects are probably all in the very beginning phases of development.
The studio stated (using machine translation) that they have two internal development teams. One team is currently focused on the Silent Hill 1 remake, while the other has begun work on a new, unannounced project. In addition to these teams, they are also working with external partners on 5 separate projects.
The studio shared more information about its recent games, stating that PC sales (through Steam) made up about 25 percent of revenue for Cronos: The New Dawn. The development team is currently juggling several projects – one major title and four smaller ones – while still concentrating their efforts.
Regarding the Silent Hill 2 remake scheduled for 2024, Bloober Team has stated that Konami is primarily responsible for addressing any performance or optimization challenges the game may have. They also haven’t mentioned anything about possible updates or downloadable content (DLC) for the game.
Back in June, Konami confirmed that Bloober Team would be developing the remake of Silent Hill. Although the publisher didn’t share many specifics about the remake, they released a brief announcement video that included musical references to the original PlayStation game, which debuted in 1999.
Konami probably decided to remake the first Silent Hill game because a remake of Silent Hill 3 wouldn’t be as appealing to fans. This is largely because the story of Silent Hill 3 heavily depends on what happened in the original game, making it less effective as a standalone title.
Last February, Motoi Okamoto, the producer of the Silent Hill series, explained Konami’s decision to partner with Bloober Team on the remake of Silent Hill 2. In a blog post, Okamoto shared that understanding the horror genre and having experience with it is more crucial for creating scary games than just having strong game design skills. He emphasized that this expertise was the main reason Bloober Team was selected for the remake.
Even if a game designer is very knowledgeable, they won’t get a job on a fighting game unless they’ve actually made fighting games before,” explained Okamoto. “It’s the same with horror games. However, when companies insist on experience in specific genres, it becomes clear that everyone has to begin as a beginner in that genre at some point. Today, independent game development is often the solution to gain that initial experience.”
He added that nowadays, no matter the type of work, if someone has the drive to create, they should be doing so. And, by carefully assessing the results, you can generally tell if they’re suited for writing genre fiction.
