Kody Brown, the father from the show Sister Wives, used to believe that love wasn’t limited and could be shared with multiple people.
Kody didn’t want his daughters’ relationships to be part of the discussion. On the October 26th episode of the TLC series, after his and Robyn Brown’s daughter, Aurora Brown, introduced her boyfriend, Brodie Utley, Kody told the rancher he felt responsible for protecting Aurora, both physically and emotionally.
Kody explained to Brodie that wanting to protect Robyn is similar to how he felt during his 15-year marriage – he wants to shield her from any pain he might cause.
Although Brodie said he’d simply given the student a pocket knife, Kody meant to make a more pointed statement.
Aurora realized her dad was talking about remaining a virgin. Meanwhile, Brodie was clearly focused on fighting, thinking things like, ‘I know how to use knives. I’ve been trained in martial arts. She’s skilled, sir.’
Of course, that’s not the sort of physicality the former polygamist was concerned with.
The father of the 18-year-olds explained to the cameras that he’s always telling Aurora and Brodie to be careful, because he doesn’t want them to take risks. He tells them that their primary job is to protect his daughter, even from themselves. He emphasizes that while they’re dating, they need to remember they’re essentially ‘courting someone else’s partner’ until they marry her, and if they don’t marry her, that status doesn’t change.
Kody, who is also a father to Dayton (25), Breanna (21), Solomon (13), and Ariella (9) with Robyn, explained his belief in chastity, stating, “It’s about respecting boundaries and not taking something that isn’t yours.”

Kody also emphasized that true love is patient and kind, and explained that anyone who loves his daughter should love her as deeply as he loved her mother. He added that he waited until marriage before becoming intimate with his daughter.
Okay, let’s be real. When I first started dating Robyn, I was still legally married to Meri, Janelle, and Christine. It’s a complicated situation, and I’m just being honest about where things stood at the time.
He confessed he had been unfaithful. He clarified that he still loves his wives, but they didn’t become physically intimate until after they were married.
Ultimately, Brodie was able to hang on through Kody’s intense questioning.
He described the man as a classic cowboy: boots, horseback riding, country music, and even playing guitar. He pointed out that, like the stereotype of a rock drummer, people might question whether someone like this is trustworthy. But, he concluded, he’d feel comfortable letting his daughter spend time with this particular cowboy.
It’s true that Kody has been much more judgmental of the boyfriends his daughters have been dating lately.
After Madison Brush got engaged to Caleb Brush, Mykelti Padron married Tony Padron, and Aspyn Brown partnered with Mitch Thompson, Kody Brown said he feels like he’s become more selective about relationships.
After divorcing Christine in 2021 and then separating from both Janelle and Meri, he explained, “Things are completely different now.”
He hopes this will have a better outcome than his previous marriages.
Growing up, I was taught that dating someone seriously at 22 meant you were headed for marriage. I always knew pretty quickly – within days or weeks – if a relationship was right for me. Looking back, after about 25 or 30 years, I realized some of those relationships weren’t good choices after all.
That’s just a small example of the insightful advice he’s given on the show’s twentieth season. Read on to discover more revelations from him and his ex-wives.

Now officially separated from her ex-husband, Kody Brown, Janelle Brown shared in the season 20 premiere of Sister Wives that she’s taking a similar approach to Meri Brown.
I’ve been following the Brown family for years, and I was really struck by what Christine said on the show’s premiere. Apparently, even after 29 years with Kody, they weren’t legally married! She explained she’d considered a ‘spiritual divorce’ a long time ago but didn’t know it was even possible. When Meri actually went through with one, Christine said she immediately wondered who she needed to contact to do the same. It just shows how different their relationships were from what we all thought.
Janelle’s former sister wife—who had previously been released from their church due to feeling abandoned—gladly offered to help reconnect Janelle with family and friends. Janelle explained, ‘She’s been really helpful in getting me back in touch with everyone.’

Madison Brush is still dealing with the fallout from her father’s actions. Despite being estranged from Kody, Madison—one of his six children with Janelle—shared on the September 28th episode that she continues to struggle with their separation.
Speaking honestly, the mother of four admitted she hopes her husband’s father will be present. She also expressed a desire for them to mend their relationship, acknowledging her own role in the situation and admitting she’s still working on managing her expectations and disappointment.
She’s finding it difficult to accept him as he is. She explained that she’s working on understanding that he may not have known how to be there for her, and that he could be going through his own pain.
He also might not be willing to cede too much ground.
Kody expressed wanting to repair his relationships with Meri, Janelle, Christine Brown, and all of their children. However, he feels like they’ve reached a standstill, because he believes any progress depends entirely on them being willing to try.

Robyn Brown, Kody’s last remaining wife, says she always desired a family, not just a relationship with him. On the September 28th episode of the show, she shared that she’d received marriage proposals before – not always formal, but several men had expressed wanting to marry her quickly.
She consistently stated her position: “I told him straight up, I was open to the idea of a plural marriage.” She added that if Kody hadn’t already been married with three wives at the time, she would have given him the same answer if he’d approached her then.
Kody explained that, despite not planning to be exclusive, he and his current partner had unintentionally become a monogamous couple, playfully declaring, “It’s just you and me now.”
Though he admittedly had one concern.
Kody hinted to Robyn that he desired a more fulfilling intimate life. In a private interview, he explained his perspective: he believed polygamy offered abundance, while monogamy often left people wanting more.

Meri is actively dating and has a clear idea of what she wants in a partner. She’s looking for a tall man who loves to travel, and—importantly—prefers dogs over cats, as she shared on the October 5th episode.
And she definitely needs someone who won’t scare easily.
She described a difficult dating experience where a man ended their conversation as soon as he learned she practiced polygamy. He told her he wasn’t interested in continuing the conversation, and she found this deeply hurtful, wondering if he dismissed her simply because of her lifestyle.
Meri explained that it was the first time she truly understood that some people wouldn’t even bother talking to her because of who she was.

Janelle believes she was the only one in her large family who really desired to settle on Coyote Pass.
On the October 3rd episode of the show, Janelle revealed she wasn’t sure she ever truly envisioned the whole family living on their 14-acre Coyote Pass property in Flagstaff, Arizona, which they bought before moving there in 2018. She was discussing the ongoing disagreements within the family about the land.
Although Kody’s second wife thought living there could work—she said it was a nice property and worth considering—she believed her ex-husband and his other wives were only temporarily interested in the idea.
She explained that no one was eager to live in that area, especially not Christine. Meri would have agreed to move if everyone else had, too.
Janelle observed that Kody and Robyn’s former property, a five-bedroom house on two acres that they recently sold for $1.7 million, felt unfinished despite being structurally in place.
Okay, so Janelle was telling us about how they originally divided everything up into four pieces of land, but honestly, as soon as she and the family moved to Flagstaff, she knew it wasn’t going to work. I mean, she just saw it, you know? It was obvious, even then, that splitting things up like that wouldn’t last. I’m so glad she recognized it so quickly, she’s so smart!

Kody believes he knows why his relationships with most of his adult children (excluding Robyn’s oldest, Dayton, and her daughters Aurora and Breanna) aren’t very good.
He admitted on October 5th that he has difficult relationships with his adult children. He explained that constant teasing and subtle jabs have created problems with trust and loyalty for everyone involved.
And these days, not many of his grown kids are on Team Kody.
Even though Mykelti Padron, one of Christine’s six children, had seemed the most publicly supportive of her father, she shared her thoughts on the family split several months after she, her husband Tony Padron, and their three children moved to North Carolina.
She believes that if he simply took responsibility for his actions, at least some of his children would try to reconnect with him. During a fan Q&A in October 2024, shared on Instagram (@withoutacrystalball), she explained that instead of blaming his children, his other wife, their parents, or rumors, a simple apology and willingness to discuss his mistakes – like saying, ‘I understand I messed up. I’m sorry. Can we talk?’ – would make a huge difference.

When Coyote Pass was sold in April 2025, Janelle and Meri finalized their separation from Kody, each receiving money from the sale. Christine had previously traded her share of the land to keep the profits from selling her house in Arizona.
On the October 5th episode, Janelle playfully told Meri it felt like saying, “Goodbye, and honestly, I hope we don’t cross paths again.”
But she certainly wouldn’t have waved off an even nicer present.
She stated that if she had been legally married to Kody, she would have expected to receive half of his possessions, as they would have been considered jointly owned.

Kody and Robyn had to finalize the purchase of their new $2.1 million home before they could give up on their plans for Coyote Pass. As Kody explained on the October 12th episode, selling the Coyote Pass property only became possible when they found a different house they really wanted.
The father of 18 children is also looking forward to leaving behind painful memories from their old house. He explained, “We’ve gone through a lot of difficult times here, and we’re hoping for a fresh start – a completely new chapter in our lives.”

Kody believed he could love multiple wives, but he admitted his attention wasn’t shared equally among them. On a recent episode of the show, he explained that he struggled to fully commit to each wife individually, and felt they didn’t always fully commit to him or to each other either. He thought his dedication to the idea of plural marriage didn’t necessarily translate into equal devotion within the family.
He believes one of his mistakes was giving Robyn a lavish lifestyle – a $1.65 million, five-bedroom house – while his other wives had more modest living arrangements. Reflecting on the end of his marriages to Meri, Janelle, and Christine, he said he doesn’t understand what went wrong, but admits he likely caused jealousy by prioritizing Robyn’s comfort and security. He felt he went to great lengths to provide for her, and his other wives struggled with that disparity.
