Seth Worley, the director of Sketch, previously worked in visual effects and making short films. Sketch is his feature film debut, and it features wonderfully created monsters that are brought to life through a young girl’s drawings.
A girl’s drawings magically come to life after her sketchbook falls into a pond, causing playful pandemonium in her town. Now, her family needs to work together to contain the creatures she accidentally brought to life.
In an August 2025 interview on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” writer and director Seth Worley described how the monsters in the movie are created. He explained that each monster is literally made of the art supplies Amber used to draw it – crayon monsters are made of crayon wax, chalk monsters of chalk, and so on. This allowed for interesting visual effects, like colored streaks left behind when the monsters move, and also determined how they could be defeated. For example, heat melts the crayon monsters, while a strong impact turns chalk monsters into dust.
During our conversation with Seth, we discussed many things, such as how the monsters were created, his experience working with child actors, the film’s nods to Jurassic Park and other movies, and even our thoughts on a potential sequel.
