Sofía Vergara Says Modern Family Cast Got “Disconnected” After Finale

The Pritchett-Dunphy family needed Phil’s-Osophy to help solve this problem.

Sofía Vergara shared that she and her fellow cast members from Modern Family grew slightly distant for a while after the show ended in 2020, but they had a strong connection during their time together.

Sofía explained to People magazine that the cast drifted apart quickly after filming wrapped because of the COVID-19 shutdown just two weeks later. “We got disconnected really fast,” she said.

Sofía Vergara, 53, who played Gloria Pritchett on the ABC show Modern Family with Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and Nolan Gould, didn’t allow a recent challenge to damage their bond. She even got together with most of the cast for a dinner in November 2023.

Since first getting together, the group has created many more fun memories, both when they’re filming and in their personal lives – they even presented at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards in February. As for their next get-together, one of the group members said they’re planning a big party to celebrate Eric, 54, and his wife, Lindsay Schweitzer, who got married last September.

And true to their friendship, Sofía expressed, “I’m super excited [for him].”

While a revival of her ABC sitcom isn’t likely, the America’s Got Talent judge will always support her former co-stars and cherish their time together.

We maintain constant communication with everyone involved in the project – both the young performers and the actors – like a big group chat,” she explained to TopMob News on October 18th. “We’re all constantly checking in on each other and offering support.”

Sofía’s connection to the show extends beyond her former colleagues; she still loves the character she played over its eleven seasons. She’s even imagined what her character and the other families have been up to since the series ended.

Sofía explained that Jay and Gloria would have been preparing for Manny to leave for college. She thought it would have been a very enjoyable season, with Jay and Gloria focusing on little Joe.

Sarah Hyland, who played Haley Dunphy, finished her time on Modern Family with her character moving on with her partner Dylan and their twins. In real life, Hyland found love with Wells Adams, a bartender from Bachelor in Paradise, and they got married in 2022 with Jesse Tyler Ferguson officiating. She also spent two seasons hosting Love Island USA while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Fiji.

Besides her main roles, Sarah also appeared in six episodes of Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin and performed on Broadway in Little Shop of Horrors and The Great Gatsby. When asked what advice she’d give her younger self, she told TopMob News in 2023, “Be kind to yourself, cherish the people around you, but always prioritize self-love.”

While Ariel Winter’s character, Alex, went to work on a project in Switzerland, the young actress herself moved a little closer to home with her boyfriend, Luke Benward, leaving California for a new location.

Besides voicing the main character in Disney’s Sofia the First, the actress has lent her voice to shows like American Dad!, Firebuds, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. She also worked on the documentary series SOSA Undercover. In an October 2024 interview with TopMob News, she shared, “I recently felt like I discovered what I’m meant to do.” She explained that she originally wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer, but now, as an entertainer, she can use her platform to help others – something she’s always been passionate about.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by what young stars do when they step away from their roles! While Luke Dunphy was starting college at the University of Oregon, Nolan Gould – that is, the actor himself – was clearly embarking on his own exciting journey. He playfully announced his adventures on Instagram in December 2024, sharing a bunch of photos of himself exploring different places and joking that he’d ‘fallen off the Earth’ – a fun way to show everyone he was living life to the fullest!

He updated Ferguson on what he’s been up to, explaining on his podcast, Dinner’s On Me, how he sold most of his possessions after Modern Family ended and started traveling across the country in a van. He managed to do this while also filming the movie Camp in 2023, a short film called JOE in 2024, and an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played the daughter of Cameron and Mitchell on Modern Family for nine seasons, once believed her acting days were over. She shared in a 2024 TikTok that she didn’t think she’d act again. However, after rediscovering her passion for performing in high school theater, she started auditioning again.

Now, Anderson-Emmons is pursuing both acting and music, and she’s even changed her professional name to Frances Anderson. She told TopMob News in August 2025 that Frances is actually her middle name, honoring a family friend of her mother’s.

She explained that while a shorter name was appealing, she also wanted to present a fresh image and dedicate a separate space specifically to her music career.

After becoming known for playing the mature Manny on the show Modern Family—the son of Sofía Vergara’s character Gloria—Rico Rodriguez has continued acting. He’s appeared on Disney’s Bunk’d and will lend his voice to the 2025 animated film Sneaks. Recently, he shared a photo of a 2023 reunion with his Modern Family castmates, joking about when they’ll all get together again.

Jeremy Maguire, in a recent interview with TopMob News, described being told he seems like a 30-year-old trapped in a child’s body. He added that people often say he has an ‘old soul,’ which is something he also believes about himself.

Jeremy Maguire, born in 2011, began playing Joe Pritchett on Modern Family in 2015, two years after the show first aired. He told TopMob that growing up on set, it was sometimes difficult to remember the cast weren’t his real family, especially because he was so close to everyone. He admitted he was very upset when the show ended, as it had been the only life he’d ever known.

He quickly bounced back from setbacks, landing a role in all 12 episodes of the 2021 Disney reboot of Turner & Hooch. And if he doesn’t find a role he likes, he’s happy to create his own. He finds writing to be a helpful outlet, saying, “I’ve written poems, stories, and even short outlines for scripts that I’d enjoy working on someday.”

Before landing the role of Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, Ty Burrell considered quitting acting. He and his wife even brainstormed other career options, but as he shared on Good Morning America, the list was surprisingly short. “I had nothing,” Burrell joked, admitting he didn’t have any other marketable skills.

I’ve been a big fan of Tyler Hubbards for years, and it’s been amazing to watch his career! Thankfully, he didn’t need a backup plan after Modern Family, landing a great role on Duncanville – but he’s still followed his passion and opened a bunch of restaurants in Utah, which I think is fantastic. It’s great to see him and Holly Burrell, the mother of his daughters Frances and Greta, pursuing all their dreams!

Because he lives in Utah, he doesn’t see his former colleagues very often – he even missed their 2023 get-together at Sofia Vergara’s house, which led some fans to worry about him! However, they still keep in touch regularly via text. As he told People magazine in 2025, “We became very close during our time together. We shared a lot of experiences, and everyone still makes an effort to stay connected.”

Julie Bowen, who played Claire for five years, remains close to her former TV family. She describes her co-stars as if they were her own children, recalling instances like supporting Sarah Hyland through a difficult relationship and attending Kaia Anderson-Emmons’ school play. Bowen shared this on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast in June 2024, simply stating, “I love them.” She also told TopMob News in 2024 that she and Sofia Vergara, her onscreen stepdaughter, have a wonderfully close relationship – “We get along like a house on fire.”

The actress is currently enjoying success with her roles in the Peacock thriller Hysteria! and the Happy Gilmore sequel. Despite this, she revealed on the 2022 All Good Things with Jason Nash podcast that she’s quite careful with her money. She admitted she lives with a constant fear of losing work and being unable to find another job.

Although she jokingly said she’s been taking a break from dating since her 2018 separation from her husband, Scott Phillips, with whom she shares sons Oliver, John, and Gustav, she admitted she’d be happy to chat with Harry Styles. “Absolutely!” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “Seriously, look at him!”

Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family made Sofía Vergara a star. Since the show ended, her career has shifted to more serious roles. While continuing to act in films like This Is Me… Now and Despicable Me 4, and as a judge on America’s Got Talent for six seasons and counting, Vergara, a mother to adult son Manolo, recently took on her first dramatic acting role.

Sofía Vergara received Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her role as Griselda Blanco in the 2024 Netflix miniseries Griselda. She told Laverne Cox on Live From TopMob: Emmys that the nominations were unexpected. “It was a surprise for me,” Vergara shared, adding that it was her first time acting in a dramatic role, and surprisingly, her first time performing in Spanish.

After separating from her husband, Joe Manganiello, two years ago, Sofia Vergara shared with Access Hollywood in January 2025 that she’s focused on attracting positive things into her life – specifically good health, financial stability, and a romantic partner, whether a boyfriend or something more.

As a huge fan, I was so disappointed when they decided not to follow Mitchell and Cam to Missouri! Eric Stonestreet explained on Watch What Happens Live that the producers were just questioning if our favorite couple still fit the direction they wanted for the show. He said after eleven seasons, they were ready for something new, and honestly, while it’s sad, I understand needing to shake things up.

For those wanting a nostalgic revisit, Craig Ferguson’s podcast, Dinner’s On Me, features interviews with his old colleagues and stars like Gavin Rossdale and Chelsea Handler. Beyond the podcast, Ferguson has been active in film, including Cocaine Bear, and on stage with productions like Here We Are.

Oh my gosh, he’s married to the most amazing person, Justin Mikita – seriously, a total dream! And they have two adorable sons, Beckett and Sullivan. I’ve been following their family for ages, and they just seem so perfect together. I can’t get enough of them!

Kansas native Cam Stonestreet, formerly a football coach, is quickly making a name for himself in television. He’s appeared in shows like American Auto and The Santa Clauses, and will soon be featured in the Dexter: Resurrection revival. In a playful March 2025 Instagram post, the Kansas City Chiefs fan announced, “Excited to be working with this amazing team!”

In real life, actor Eric Stonestreet married nurse Lindsay Schweitzer. He announced the happy news on his 54th birthday in September 2025, sharing on Instagram, “It’s my birthday and guess what I got? I got married!”

Ed O’Neill was already well-known as a TV dad after playing Al Bundy for eleven seasons on Married…with Children. When he was offered the role of Jay Pritchett, the family patriarch on Modern Family, he was hesitant about doing another sitcom. However, after reading the script, he told Jenny McCarthy in 2016 that he knew he had to take the part.

He recently portrayed Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in the 2024 film Clipped and will also be featured in Ryan Murphy’s new legal drama series, All’s Fair.

For many years, former Youngstown State football player John Jivovich has been in a relationship with actress Catherine Rusoff, whom he considers his life partner. Together, they have two daughters, Claire and Sophia.

Despite a years-long, sometimes rocky relationship with Haley, the actor best known from Good Luck Charlie became a part of the family when twins were introduced on the show. He called it “the best job of my life” in a 2020 Instagram post.

He’s been in a few short films since then, including Always Come in Second and Nest. However, he announced his retirement from acting during an Instagram Live session in September 2024. He explained that acting had been a long journey, but he felt it was time to stop, as the entire process was ultimately unhealthy for him.
