Solo Leveling Anime Will Never Adapt The Best Backstory

After finishing its adaptation of the popular Jeju Island Arc last year, the first season of the Solo Leveling anime hasn’t been renewed. However, fans can still enjoy the world of Solo Leveling through Solo Leveling: Arise, a role-playing game developed by Netmarble. Released in the U.S. last November, the free-to-play game is available on PC, iOS, and Android and uses a gacha system with Tickets. The game’s official website features “Hunter Origin” one-shot stories that expand on the backstories of both familiar characters from the original story and new characters introduced in Arise. These stories have proven popular, especially the one focusing on a beloved character from the original Solo Leveling series.

Igris is a key and incredibly strong shadow created by Sung Jinwoo, with a direct connection to Ashborn, the previous Shadow Monarch. While much of his history is a mystery in the story, he remains a fan favorite. We learn about his difficult past in the 25th Hunter Origin, which details his life before serving the Shadow Monarch. Because the anime closely follows the original story, it’s almost certain that Igris’ backstory will be included in the adaptation.

Igris’ Backstory Is Still The Best in Solo Leveling

Once a human named Sian Halat, Igris was a highly respected Knight Captain. He often felt like someone incredibly powerful was observing him, but he never figured out who it was. The king valued Sian’s skills and achievements, but this also made other nobles envious. One of them plotted to eliminate him. When Sian received a sudden summons from the king, he had to leave his home, despite his wife’s worries.

He was attacked by multiple soldiers, but he fought them all off. Sian later explained that he had intentionally walked into the ambush, though he hadn’t anticipated his enemy would also kidnap his wife and hold his soldiers hostage. Facing the imminent death of his loved ones and troops, Sian gave himself up, only to be forced to watch them die and was left heartbroken. As he neared death himself, he felt the presence of the same mysterious figure watching him again.

Following a great tragedy, Sian pledged his allegiance to the Shadow Monarch thousands of years ago. Though the Hunter Origin story didn’t show their first meeting, the comic has already revealed what happened afterward. In the anime’s first season, Sian, who became known as Igris, battled Jinwoo as part of the System’s plan, and quickly became a fan favorite.
