Guillermo del Toro, the acclaimed film director, loves video games, and he especially enjoys the newer God of War games.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he was asked to name his favorite game of all time. While he mentioned many great titles, he spent the most time talking about the action series created by Santa Monica Studio.
Guillermo del Toro says certain God of War games are among the most cinematic experiences he’s ever encountered.
The fight between Kratos and Odin (who seems to be a stand-in for Baldur) is incredible. Odin keeps getting back up, fights like a character straight out of Peaky Blinders, and really gives Kratos a tough time. It’s a fantastic moment in the game.
He continues, praising the cinematic qualities of the modern games.
Guillermo del Toro praised the game’s lighting, explaining that the way it uses data and the console’s capabilities to create atmospheric effects and light makes it look like a movie.
The games God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok were designed to feel realistic and like a movie, even using long, uninterrupted camera shots to draw players in. Guillermo del Toro seems to have been very impressed with this approach.
He also highlights fantastic games like BioShock, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid, Left 4 Dead, Red Dead Redemption, and Shadow of the Colossus, which he considers a true masterpiece.
He clearly has excellent taste! What are your thoughts on Guillermo del Toro’s opinions about God of War? Share them in the comments below.
