Sonic the Hedgehog 4, expected to be a major movie in 2027, might take a surprisingly strange turn. While Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will likely follow the popular story of Sonic Adventure 2, the next installment could draw inspiration from a much more unusual source within the video game series.
The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is here, giving fans a sneak peek at the next installment. The movie will introduce Amy Rose and Metal Sonic as new characters, continuing the story from Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s ending where Amy helped Sonic battle an army of Metal Sonics. Joining the cast are stars like Matt Berry, Ben Kingsley, and Nick Offerman, making for a truly impressive lineup.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 May Adapt Sonic CD’s Time Travel Story

The story in the original Sonic CD from 1993 wasn’t very detailed, like many games from that era. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 seems to be using almost everything from that game’s story. This is because Sonic CD first introduced the characters Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, and both are appearing in the fourth Sonic movie. This suggests the groundwork for adapting Sonic CD’s narrative is already in place.
Interestingly, Sonic CD added time travel to the Sonic universe, letting players experience different versions of levels. This might make Sonic 4 particularly unusual. The Sonic the Hedgehog 4 trailer includes Robotnik saying, “You’re running out of time,” which seems like a strange line to include unless time travel is actually a part of the movie. It’s likely that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will incorporate this element.
Okay, so that post-credits scene in Sonic 3 with Metal Sonic and Amy just… appeared out of nowhere, right? Sonic’s wandering through the woods, and suddenly they’re there. But thinking about it, it totally clicks. It feels like they traveled back in time. My take? Amy and Metal Sonic are from the future, and they already know Sonic and his crew are the only ones who can prevent some major disaster down the line. It’s a clever setup for what’s coming next, and it really makes you wonder what threat they’re trying to warn us about.
Time Travel Could Explain Why Jim Carrey’s Eggman Is Back

A major question surrounding Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is the return of Jim Carrey. He famously played Dr. Robotnik in the first three Sonic movies, even taking on a second role as Gerald Robotnik in the third film. However, both versions of Robotnik appeared to die at the end of that movie, leading many to believe Carrey’s involvement with the series was over.
Jim Carrey is returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, though it’s unclear how his character will be brought back. There’s a possibility his character, Robotnik, didn’t actually die, similar to a trick played in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Alternatively, if the movie involves time travel, Carrey might play a different version of Robotnik – a future iteration known as Eggman Nega.
Eggman Nega is the descendant of Dr. Eggman (Ivo), but he’s a more accomplished villain. Interestingly, Nega looks down on Ivo, feeling his repeated failures have damaged their family name. A possible future storyline in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could show Eggman Nega ruling a dark world with an army of Metal Sonics. His use of time travel might explain why these robotic duplicates are hunting Sonic, and why they first showed up at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Exploring Sonic’s backstory would be exciting, and shifting away from the Ivo Robotnik character while still featuring Jim Carrey would be a smart move. Carrey’s performance is a major draw for the Sonic the Hedgehog films, and it would be a mistake to leave him out of the next one. Robotnik has been a similar villain in every movie so far, so introducing Nega would offer something new and revitalizing for the series.
Additionally, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 could bring back both Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Eggman) and introduce the character Nega. They could even team up to fight Nega, similar to how Robotnik and Sonic briefly worked together in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 after Gerald Robotnik appeared. Time travel opens up many exciting story options for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and this idea is one of the most promising.
