The third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is now filming! Director Jeff Fowler shared a photo confirming production has begun, and the image reveals something Sonic fans have been hoping to see on screen for years.

The hammer belongs to Amy Rose, a popular character from the Sonic games. At the end of Sonic 3, a sneak peek of the next movie showed Sonic being attacked by Metal Sonic robots. Just when it looked like Sonic was defeated, a mysterious figure with a hammer jumped in and destroyed the robots. This figure turned out to be Amy Rose, and now she’s officially joining the movie series in Sonic 4, with Kristen Bell (The Good Place) providing her voice.
Amy Rose first appeared in the 1993 video game Sonic CD (though she technically made a brief appearance in a Sonic comic book a year earlier). Sonic CD featured a complex story where Sonic travels through time to stop Dr. Robotnik from building a powerful robot army. Amy was introduced as a cheerful ally with a strong affection for Sonic. While fans didn’t immediately love her, she quickly developed a dedicated following and returned as a playable character in later games like Sonic Drift and Sonic Adventure (1998), which gave her the look she has today. Throughout the 2000s, Amy continued to appear in Sonic games, both as a character you could play and a non-playable character. As she became more prominent in the Sonic universe, opinions on whether she was a valuable addition or an irritating character became increasingly divided.
Amy Rose became much more popular in the 2010s and 2020s thanks to her appearances in animated Sonic series like Sonic Boom and Sonic Prime, which were shown worldwide on TV and streaming services. By the time Sonic the Hedgehog 4 comes out in 2027, a whole generation of Sonic fans – and many new ones – will likely see Amy Rose (and her hammer) as a central character, alongside Knuckles and Tails. With Kristen Bell, a popular actress among fans, cast in the role, Amy could become even more popular and potentially star in her own live-action projects if she’s a hit in Sonic 4.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced, most of the original actors from the Sonic movies are likely to be back for Sonic 4. This includes Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic’s guardians Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and supporting actors Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore. We’ll probably also see familiar faces in smaller roles, like Krysten Ritter, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub. Plus, Jim Carrey, who previously said he was finished playing Dr. Robotnik, might return even though his character seemingly died in the last movie.
The next Sonic the Hedgehog movie is scheduled to come out on March 19, 2027. Join the conversation about the series on the ComicBook Forum!
