For almost three decades, Sonic the Hedgehog has been known for his incredible speed. This trait is what sets him apart from other characters, even dating back to his debut on the Sega Genesis. Not only does Sonic possess remarkable speed, but it was recently revealed that he can outrun DC Comics’ fastest hero, The Flash, also known as the “Fastest Man Alive.” All of the primary 2D and 3D Sonic games revolve around the main character utilizing his swift agility to evade Doctor Eggman’s various devices. However, Sega has also developed numerous spin-offs over time, and these titles often present unique gameplay styles.
Starting from Sonic Drift in 1994, Sega’s mascot has been featuring in kart racing games similar to Mario Kart. Over the years, people have wondered why a fast character like Sonic would choose to drive his Speed Star car, even though it was featured in a Transformers collaboration toy this year. Before the launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Takashi Iizuka from Sonic Team shared some insights with Shacknews about Sonic’s enthusiasm for racing.
Indeed, Sonic truly appreciates having a good time. His love for competition, combined with the enjoyment of competing with his companions, is a key aspect he cherishes. If we were simply sprinting at full speed, Sonic would outrun everyone. However, it’s not as enjoyable for him and what he finds more appealing is the thrill of racing, the competitive edge, and spending time with friends in this context. Therefore, that’s why he participates in races, according to Iizuka.
This account aligns well with what Sega has previously stated. In the very first episode of TailsTube from 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog was asked a similar question. When queried about why he’s frequently seen driving a race car, Sonic appeared puzzled by the query. The character casually responded, “Because it’s fun!” It does seem plausible that a speed enthusiast like him would seek alternative ways to enjoy racing, considering his considerable advantage on foot. By joining vehicle-only races, he gives his companions a fair opportunity to compete.
On September 25th, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds”! It’s been a while since Sonic hit the racing track, last in 2019 with “Team Sonic Racing”. So far, reactions have been generally positive, and I can’t wait to see if it will surpass the acclaim that “Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed” has enjoyed among fans. Fingers crossed that Sega delivers an even better experience for us Sonic enthusiasts! The countdown is on until we get a closer look at how this game is taking shape.
