Being a Sonic the Hedgehog fan is exciting right now! Not only is a fourth movie in the works, but Sonic has also teamed up with the DC Universe. Now, Sonic and his friends are joining forces with Godzilla in Sonic The Hedgehog X Godzilla #1, and the first issue is a fun, action-filled adventure that delivers exactly what you’d hope for.
One of the best parts of seeing two big franchises team up is watching familiar characters deal with new situations, and the Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla comic does this really well. However, the real star of the show is Dr. Eggman – he’s fantastic in every scene! Combined with Jack Lawrence’s art and Reggie Graham’s colors, Eggman might be the best part of the entire comic. Sonic, Tails, and Amy are still great, and the massive monster battle is exciting, but Eggman truly shines.

It’s Not Just About Godzilla

The story begins like a typical Sonic game, with Sonic battling Dr. Eggman in one of his inventions. It quickly establishes the blend of comedy and action you can expect, but then things take a dramatic turn with the arrival of the monsters from the Monsterverse.
Okay, so the monsters definitely add some excitement, but honestly, the overall feel of the story is still the same. What really got me was seeing how small Sonic, Tails, and Amy looked next to these giant Titans – it just highlights how massive those creatures are! It was a little weird though, that Godzilla himself wasn’t even in this issue, even though the whole thing is about him!
But don’t worry, Sonic’s world isn’t short on powerful enemies! Alongside the main villain, Mechagodzilla and Mothra are also causing trouble, and Marino and Lawrence handle them both impressively. Mothra, in particular, really shines – she looks fantastic and plays a significant role in the story. Hopefully, we’ll see a more developed relationship between Mothra and Amy as the series progresses.
Dr. Eggman Is The Star

Although the main draw is Sonic and his friends battling monsters, Dr. Eggman consistently steals the spotlight. The artists perfectly captured his over-the-top reactions, and it’s hilarious watching him try to use the monsters – particularly Mechagodzilla – for his own schemes. It’s a highlight of the entire issue.
He consistently delivers some of the funniest moments, with one particular panel leaving me in stitches. His dynamic with both the monsters and the Sonic characters is key to the series’ success, and that importance will likely grow as the story introduces even more monsters.
This is particularly true when considering Godzilla, and it remains to be seen how that aspect will develop. Even without Godzilla’s full involvement, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla’ is a promising beginning to an exciting series, and I’m eager to see what kind of trouble the next installments will bring.
