Amazon’s Prime Video is quickly becoming a popular destination for fans, offering successful shows across genres like sci-fi, horror, and fantasy. Amazon, along with MGM+, is clearly investing in these consistently popular genres. They’re currently developing a new fantasy series based on a bestselling book series from the 2020s, and have even tapped a highly-regarded sci-fi director to helm the first episode.
Okay, so I’ve been hearing everyone talk about Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing – it came out in 2023 and totally blew up, especially on TikTok’s BookTok community. It won a bunch of awards last year, and she’s already released two sequels, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with two more on the way to wrap up the Empyrean series. Now, get this – Amazon is making it into a TV show! And they’ve got Lisa Joy, who did Westworld and Fallout, directing the first episode. Prime Video just announced it, and she’s going to be an executive producer alongside Michael B. Jordan, Athena Wickham, and her husband/collaborator Jonathan Nolan. I’m seriously excited about this one!
What Is Fourth Wing About?

Fourth Wing takes place in the kingdom of Navarre and centers on Violet Sorrengail, a 20-year-old who is unexpectedly commanded by her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, to join the Riders at the Basgiath War College. Basgiath prepares its people for war through training in four areas: Infantry, Healing, Writing, or Dragon Riding—a rigorous three-year program. Despite being physically frail and naturally inclined towards writing like her father, Violet must train as a Rider, learning magic and bonding with a dragon. As she navigates the challenges of training alongside her fellow cadets, Violet uncovers secrets about Navarre’s history, realizing her enrollment and the Rider Quadrant itself are connected to a suppressed rebellion her mother previously crushed. The story follows Violet’s journey as she discovers her strengths as both a Rider and a potential rebel, setting the stage for a larger conflict.
Fourth Wing is rich with detailed world-building. Author Rebecca Yarros has crafted a sprawling fantasy world, Navarre, reminiscent of Game of Thrones, complete with diverse regions inspired by The Hunger Games and a deep history that impacts the current story. The series skillfully blends familiar fantasy elements – like dragon riding and different types of specialized military training – in a fresh and original way. It also incorporates popular young adult tropes, such as a romance between the protagonist, Violet, and a revolutionary leader who is determined to succeed where his father failed, contributing to the series’ broad appeal.
Popular young adult book series like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Divergent were often discussed as potential TV shows. Amazon has proven its ability to successfully adapt fantasy and other book series for television – shows like The Wheel of Time, Jack Ryan, Cross, and Reacher have all become multi-season hits. This suggests Fourth Wing is in capable hands, particularly with Lisa Joy leading the adaptation. She has a strong track record of building immersive TV worlds from challenging source material, as demonstrated by her work on Westworld and Fallout.
You can now buy the Fourth Wing books, and a TV series based on the books is being made for Prime Video. Join the conversation about all things fantasy on the ComicBook Forum!
