Back when the expanded version of PS Plus, known as PS Plus Premium, was first revealed a few years back, many PlayStation enthusiasts viewed it as an opportunity for some long-stranded PS3 games to finally break free from their constraints – though this freedom would come via streaming.
The expectation hasn’t been met, as a significant portion of the PS3 library on PS Plus Premium appears to be a repetition of what was available on PS Now previously, and there have been limited new additions since its launch. In reality, the initial Resistance games were added to the service, only to be taken off again within barely half a year. This situation leaves fans of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with minimal optimism that their cherished titles will ever be saved.
It appears that Sony may be considering adding streamable PlayStation 3 games to its PS Plus Premium service, although they have not made a definitive announcement yet. In an interview with Game File, Nick Maguire, Vice President of Global Services at Sony, hinted at this possibility by stating: “We haven’t rejected the idea outright. There are opportunities there. However, many PlayStation 3 games are already available for streaming.
For third-party games originally released on PlayStation 3, Sony must collaborate with the publisher to make them available on PS Plus Premium. Within Sony, an internal team specializes in emulation handles this process, but there can be a slight delay compared to the processes for PS5 and PS4 games. Sony aims to add at least one classic game to PS Plus Premium every month, which is all they’ve consistently managed so far in the last two updates.
As a gamer, I’m all about keeping our game library balanced and exciting. We’ve got an impressive 80 game collections in our catalog, so we’re constantly updating and introducing fresh content. It might mean removing some games from time to time, but that’s just to maintain the appeal, introduce something new, and help players discover hidden gems too!
That’s hardly a convincing argument, is it?
