As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share some exciting news about the PlayStation 5. Despite rising prices globally due to multiple reasons, rumors are swirling that Sony might be planning a budget-friendly alternative to prevent another price increase. Based on a report by Billbil-kun on Dealabs, a new model of the PS5, dubbed the CFI-2100, has been detected in certification documents, sporting a lower storage capacity of approximately 825GB.
The main distinction between the latest SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) of the PS5 and its Slim predecessor lies primarily in storage capacity. Unlike the initial 825 GB storage offered with the PS5 upon release, this new model comes equipped with a 1 TB SSD for data storage. Given past pricing trends, it’s worth noting that the PS5 Digital Edition was initially priced at €399 back in 2020. However, it subsequently increased to €449 and then recently to €499 this year, representing a total price increase of €100 over a five-year period.
Considering the current context, the report suggests that Sony has intentionally chosen to downgrade the storage for the new PS5 model (PS5 SKU) primarily to avoid another price increase. As per Billbil-kun’s predictions, the CFI-2100 variant of the PS5 is anticipated to be priced at €499 upon its store release on September 13. Moreover, a standard version of the console with similar storage capacity is expected to launch at a later time.
This year, the cost of PlayStation 5 increased in numerous markets worldwide, such as Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Besides the overall inflation, it seems that one significant factor causing these price hikes is the trade tariffs set by the U.S. government in multiple countries. In May, Sony’s CEO and president, Hiroki Totoki, mentioned considering the U.S. market when establishing their pricing strategies.
Last year, Totoki discussed the potential cost of the PS5, indicating that reducing its price significantly might prove challenging due to technical constraints. During a recent investors’ conference, it was suggested that the compact design of the PS5’s chipset plays a role in making it difficult to lower the console’s price.
Although it aims to maintain profitability, Sony also emphasizes the importance of fostering user engagement and unit sales. It strives for a harmonious blend of these elements in its business strategy.
As a dedicated Sony fan, I can’t help but notice that they’ve not just been ramping up their hardware costs, but also adjusting prices on their services. For instance, earlier this year, they announced increases in the price for their PlayStation Plus subscription packages across all tiers.
Similar to numerous businesses globally, we’re experiencing effects from global market changes, leading us to modify local prices for PlayStation Plus subscriptions. This price change is designed to support our ongoing effort to provide you with top-notch games and additional perks as part of your PlayStation Plus service.
In spite of an increase in PlayStation Plus prices, it’s worth noting that the company has reported a global surge in subscriptions for this service.
