Sony is Shutting Down Dark Outlaw Games, Moving Away From Mobile Development – Rumor

Today was a difficult day in the gaming industry, with Epic Games laying off over 1,000 workers. Adding to the news, reports suggest Sony is closing Dark Outlaw Games, led by Jason Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty Zombies. This studio was actually created by Sony just last year, after Blundell’s previous studio, Deviation Games, was shut down.

There’s more bad news: Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports that mobile game development is also facing cuts, with about 50 employees being laid off. A Resetera user shared information suggesting that previously announced games like MLB The Show Mobile and Ratchet and Clank: Ranger Rumble will continue to receive support. However, the company appears to be prioritizing a small number of key projects.

While they didn’t cite a source, Schreier chimed in on that thread to simply reply, “Yep.”

This news comes as PlayStation is reportedly stopping the release of its exclusive single-player games on PC, including the game previously known as Ghost of Yōtei. An official announcement is expected during an upcoming investor call. Housemarque, the developer, might also address this if questioned about a PC release for their new game, Saros. Despite this shift, Sony still appears interested in live service games, as evidenced by titles like Horizon Hunters Gathering and the ongoing support for Fairgame$.

Ugh, more gaming layoffs. It’s really hitting hard today – PlayStation just shut down Dark Outlaw Games. That studio was pretty new, formed last year by Jason Blundell, who used to lead the Call of Duty stuff. It’s kinda rough because his other PlayStation studio, Deviation Games, got shut down earlier this year too. And it’s not just them – PlayStation’s also cutting back in mobile development, and all in all, about 50 people are losing their jobs. It’s a tough time for everyone in the industry right now.
