Sony plans to begin filming its Horizon movie in 2026 and is currently searching for a director to lead the project.
Recent court documents obtained by The Game Post reveal the film has a completed script and is nearing the start of production, with a planned release in 2027.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PS Productions, stated in a document filed as part of their legal case with Tencent:
A film based on the Horizon video game series is in the works with Columbia Pictures. We have a completed script and are currently looking for a director. We’re aiming to start filming in 2026 and release the movie in 2027. This project continues the successful partnership between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, who previously collaborated on the films Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023).
PlayStation is taking legal action against Tencent, claiming their game ‘Light of Motiram’ is a near-exact copy of one of PlayStation’s titles. PlayStation is arguing in court that this copycat game has negatively impacted their own franchise.
The film is being discussed because Sony is emphasizing Aloy’s value to their company, stating she represents their brand. They believe the new protagonist in Light of Motiram is too similar to Aloy and could mislead customers.
This lawsuit has already revealed several details about how PlayStation operates, including that they traveled to China hoping to learn about a potential mobile game adaptation of The Last of Us.
So, instead of working with me on a new game, Tencent just suggested using it for one of their existing ‘Horizon’ projects. Apparently, that eventually turned into what we now know as ‘Light of Motiram’ – according to Sony, anyway.
We learned more about the upcoming Horizon movie at CES earlier this year, after it was first announced. This is the first update on its development we’ve received.
Sony originally intended to create a TV show based on the post-apocalyptic series with Netflix, but when that agreement fell through, they started considering a movie instead.
