I’m so excited – a new Horizon game is coming! But it’s going to be a totally different experience than the ones we’re used to. Sony just announced *Horizon Steel Frontiers*, and it’s a massive multiplayer online role-playing game – basically, you’ll be teaming up with other players in the Horizon world! It’s set in the same universe as *Zero Dawn* and *Forbidden West*, and you’ll still be hunting those awesome machines with traps and weapons. The cool thing is it’s being developed by NCSOFT, but Guerrilla Games, the original creators, are still involved. It’s mostly for mobile, which is a bit different, but PC players will be able to play it too through NCSOFT’s Purple launcher. Sadly, there’s no word yet on a PlayStation 5 version, which is a bummer, but I’m still really looking forward to checking it out!
Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director at Guerrilla Games, explains that they always envisioned the Horizon universe as something that could be explored through various experiences.
Sung-Gu Lee, executive producer at NCSOFT, describes the main idea behind Horizon Steel Frontiers as the excitement of battling massive machines.
The game allows players to create a unique hunter belonging to any of the established tribes – one player might be Tenakth, while another could be Oseram.
NCSOFT also released a gameplay trailer showcasing what a typical machine hunt might look like.
PlayStation’s games as a service initiative continues
Sony previously announced a goal to have twelve online games available for PlayStation by 2026. However, most of those plans haven’t worked out. Several projects, like a multiplayer Spider-Man game and an online version of The Last of Us, were either never approved or were canceled after significant development time.
There has been one major success though: Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. Released last year, it’s sold over 12 million copies on PlayStation 5 and PC, and recently launched on Xbox Series X|S, where it’s performing well according to Sony.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is another multiplayer game in the works, and it will be interesting to see how it does, particularly since it isn’t the only multiplayer Horizon game currently being developed.
Another Horizon multiplayer is on the way for PlayStation
The upcoming Horizon game won’t be coming to PlayStation, but another multiplayer Horizon title is in the works. Guerrilla Games is developing this new game, which is expected to be a co-op experience. Leaked footage from years ago suggests its focus on multiplayer.
Hackers revealed in December 2023 that the game is tentatively titled “Horizon Hunters Gathering,” though details are still scarce. While not officially announced, this news is especially interesting now that “Horizon Steel Frontiers” has been revealed.
This raises several questions: how will these two games differ, how will they be sold, and when will they be released? We’ll need to wait for more information.
Currently, you can play “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered” and “Horizon Forbidden West” on both Windows PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) and PlayStation 5.
