Sorry Elektra And Karen, But Daredevil’s Greatest Love Will Always Be Another MCU Icon

Matthew Murdock, despite being blind, has a natural charm that people find hard to resist – a trait that’s been evident even in his recent appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in Daredevil: Born Again. His friend, Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, noticed Matt’s talent for attracting women way back in the first season of the Netflix Daredevil series, adding an amusing layer to Matt’s life as he balances his legal work with his vigilante activities.

A great relationship from the original Marvel comics likely won’t happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is due to how Marvel stories evolved and issues with who owned the rights to certain characters. Specifically, Daredevil’s world wasn’t fully integrated into the MCU until Daredevil: Born Again, which was too late for one of the original Avengers to connect with Matt Murdock. Even using flashbacks wouldn’t be enough to show them falling in love before the character’s death in the current storyline.

Daredevil’s MCU Love Interests Are A Mixed Bag

Matt Murdock’s relationships in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have all faced difficulties. Despite this, he’s consistently found new love interests or rekindled past romances, such as:

  • Elektra Natchios
  • Claire Temple
  • Karen Page
  • Jennifer Walters
  • Dr. Heather Glenn

Matt and Karen recently professed their love for each other in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but many viewers haven’t felt a strong connection between them, despite the talented performances of Charlie Cox and Deborah Ann Woll. In fact, the romance between Karen and Frank Castle in the Netflix Daredevil and Punisher series was much more compelling. It seems strange that Karen would end up with Matt, especially considering both she and Frank grapple with similar feelings about violence – stemming from her past trauma and Frank’s influence – if Frank weren’t so emotionally distant.

It would have been interesting to see a romance between Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and Natalia Romanova, also known as Black Widow. Unfortunately, because Black Widow died in Avengers: Endgame, it’s unlikely that Scarlett Johansson’s character and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will become a couple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though Cox has expressed interest.

Charlie Cox And Scarlett Johansson Can Never Be

In the 1970s Daredevil comics, Black Widow was a significant part of the story. Matt Murdock even left Karen Page to be with Natasha Romanoff, and they moved to San Francisco together. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) took a different path. Instead of a romance with either Daredevil or Bucky Barnes’ Winter Soldier, Natasha Romanoff’s storyline focused on her complicated and unfulfilled feelings for Bruce Banner.

Now that Nat (Black Widow) is deceased in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems Marvel is ready to move forward without her. While Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are returning for future projects, suggesting a potential path for Scarlett Johansson to reprise her role, her recent casting in The Batman: Part II strongly indicates she’s shifting her focus from Marvel to DC.

We’ve seen through flashbacks just how intense Matt Murdock and Elektra’s relationship used to be before the Netflix Daredevil series. It’s possible we could see a similar flashback showing Matt with Natalie (Nat), but it would be tricky to fit that into the timeline. The MCU would need to create enough space between the Netflix seasons of Daredevil and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again to allow for a relationship or even a brief romance. Even if it was just a quick fling never mentioned before, a lighthearted romance like the one between Daredevil and She-Hulk in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law would be a fun addition.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is now streaming on Disney+.
