The original manga was transformed into an anime in two significant sections: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. As a sequel to Dragon Ball, which laid the groundwork for the story, Dragon Ball Z played a crucial role in establishing the franchise’s global popularity. In Z, the stakes were higher, featuring intense action scenes and iconic characters, both heroes and villains. Each villain presents unique obstacles for our protagonists, causing destruction as they go.

In Dragon Ball Z, known for its action-packed storyline, battles with villains are consistently exciting. Among these antagonists, Frieza is often recognized as the series’ most significant adversary, significantly raising the stakes and contributing to its global popularity. Introduced during the Namek Saga, Frieza was a ruthless space tyrant possessing immense powers who found delight in destroying planets. As leader of the Planet Trade Organization, later known as the Frieza Force, his mission was to conquer planets, annihilate their inhabitants, and then auction off these worlds to the highest bidder. Although I comprehend Frieza’s influence, it is another villain that truly took this concept and refined it to perfection.

Cell Brought Out the Best in Every Character, Including Himself

From my perspective as a die-hard Dragon Ball Z fan, I’ve got to say that while Frieza is undeniably the epitome of pure evil, Cell stands out as a complex antagonist. His strength is impressive, but it’s his strategic mind, patience, and chilling composure that really set him apart.

In contrast to Frieza, who swept through opponents like a storm in the Namek Saga, many characters faced defeat. Even Goku had his fair share of struggles, but he ultimately triumphed after his transformation. The battle against Frieza became more about the protagonist’s growth rather than the broader narrative itself. It was almost like a one-man spectacle, with the focus squarely on our hero. Cell, however, offers a more intricate and engaging antagonistic role, making the story richer and more dynamic.

In contrast to the storyline, titled “The Cell Chronicles,” centered around heritage, transformation, and the extraordinary measures taken by heroes to safeguard their world, a battle ensued between Piccolo, Vegeta, Tien, and even Future Trunks against the antagonist, using all their resources. As usual, Goku arrived late in the fray, acknowledging that he couldn’t defeat Cell alone – something he had never done while facing Frieza. In the end, it was Gohan, Goku’s son with Saiyan blood, who demonstrated remarkable abilities since childhood, that ultimately vanquished the villain.

Cell’s Birth Is a Consequence of the Battles Fought By the Z Warriors

The character is depicted as a revolting humanoid insect, whose transformations were contingent upon the individuals he devoured, along with their unique abilities. This creature was brought into being by Dr. Gero’s advanced computer system, using genetic material from several combatants such as Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza, and King Cold. Additionally, genetic material from characters like Raditz, Nappa, Tien, Krillin, and Yamcha was also collected by Dr. Gero. Eventually, in a different timeframe, Cell came to existence and returned to the past to assimilate Androids 17 and 18 to attain his ultimate form.

In essence, Cell represented the pinnacle of fighting ability that surpassed all other fighters, a testament to the battles waged by the Z Warriors. Given that it was during these conflicts that Dr. Gero gathered the necessary data for Cell’s creation, it can be said that his emergence was a direct outcome of the Z Warriors’ combat history. Had those battles not taken place, the dreadful villain known as Cell might never have come to be.

Compared to Cell, Frieza Comes Off as Rather One-Note

In essence, Frieza, undeniably an iconic figure, thrives on control and instilling fear, embodying the quintessential shonen anime antagonist who craved power and global domination. His ambition for immortality, however, led to his downfall. This ruthless ruler didn’t shy away from using brute force but also struck a personal blow by killing Krillin to provoke Goku, leading to the legendary Super Saiyan transformation that left its mark on both anime and manga lore.

While Frieza may display a more aggressive nature, boasting a destructive tendency towards challenges and anger, Cell demonstrates a more complex character with a focused objective – the pursuit of his “perfect form” and the subsequent testing against strong adversaries. This contrasts Frieza’s character, which remains relatively unchanged throughout Dragon Ball Super despite his new flashy appearance.

The cell was brought to life due to Dr. Gero’s animosity towards Goku and his desire for revenge. As it evolved from its imperfect to perfect form, its personality shifted, transforming from a struggling creature to a self-assured strategist. Unlike many of its opponents, it doesn’t immediately defeat them when provoked. Instead, it delights in tormenting and testing them, ultimately pushing them to grow stronger. As a villain in the Dragon Ball Z series, Cell embodies a confrontation with the past and the consequences of turning the world’s most powerful defenders against themselves. The climactic battle between Gohan and Cell is still considered one of the most emotionally satisfying developments of Goku’s Super Saiyan debut by Dragon Ball Z fans, even years later.
