Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, have discussed the show’s recent focus on political topics, particularly regarding President Donald Trump. They explained that the shift towards political satire wasn’t intentional, but rather a result of politics becoming a dominant part of popular culture.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone explain heavily political narrative of South Park Season 28
In a recent interview with The New York Times, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone discussed the show’s increasingly political focus in Season 28.
The show’s creators said their focus on Donald Trump and his administration simply reflected what was happening in the culture at the time. According to Parker, they didn’t intentionally become political; rather, politics became a dominant part of pop culture. They also noted that while the recent episodes have been controversial, they’ve also attracted record numbers of viewers – more than double the audience from 2023.
Stone explained that criticizing the Trump administration felt risky and off-limits. He and his colleague, Trey, were drawn to this forbidden territory, seeing it as a challenge they couldn’t resist. As Stone put it, ‘If something’s considered taboo, that’s exactly where we want to be.’
The creators initially intended to feature a character based on Trump in just one episode. However, the storylines for that character – which were often over-the-top and dreamlike – grew throughout the entire season. According to Parker, they discovered a lot of comedic potential and decided to continue developing the character’s arc.
The show’s creators explained that their comedy aims to poke fun at all forms of extremism. As Parker put it, they satirize everyone, regardless of their beliefs. They’ve been doing this for years, previously targeting what some call ‘woke’ culture, and they find the current situation equally amusing.
A recent South Park Halloween episode directly addressed criticism that the show has become too focused on politics. In the episode, Stan complains to his friends, saying the show “sucks now” because of all the political content. However, co-creator Trey Parker explained that politics is unavoidable, stating it’s become so pervasive in all aspects of life – not just politics, but pop culture as well.
