For the past few months, South Park has been entangled in significant licensing disputes following the termination of its agreement with Warner Bros. for streaming. However, it has now found a new exclusive home on a major platform through a fresh deal. In other words, after parting ways with Warner Bros., Paramount was planning to broadcast South Park as one of their new streaming offerings. But due to the unexpected complications arising from its upcoming merger with Skydance, there were additional legal hurdles to overcome as well.
It appears that the run of South Park has reached a conclusion, as creators Trey Stone and Matt Parker have inked a fresh agreement with Paramount for the show’s continuation. This contract reportedly guarantees $300 million USD annually to make Paramount+ the exclusive streaming platform for new episodes of South Park. Although the details are not completely set, fans can look forward to enjoying future episodes on their new streaming home. (LA Times)
What’s Going on With South Park?
Under this fresh agreement, Paramount is set to shell out approximately $300 million USD annually for five years to stream “South Park” exclusively. This totals the value of their library at a staggering $1.5 billion USD over the duration of the deal. Additionally, as part of this new arrangement, Park County has pledged to produce ten episodes per year. This could potentially mark the end of the specials that have been released recently, as Paramount is seeking to generate fresh content outside their previous contract with Warner Bros.
Initially, after the deal with Warner Bros. ended, “South Park” was streaming on HBO Max temporarily. However, there were discussions about making the series available on both HBO Max and Paramount+ as a non-exclusive title. Unfortunately, these talks collapsed over the weekend, prompting Paramount to pursue their own deal independently. Given that “South Park” Season 27 is set to premiere soon and they’re scheduled to appear at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, it seems both Paramount and Skydance aimed to finalize an agreement swiftly.
What’s Next for South Park?
Tonight, July 23rd, marks the debut of South Park Season 27’s first episode! Previously, fresh episodes of this animated series were made available for streaming on HBO Max shortly after their television premiere. However, it’s uncertain at the moment where these new episodes will be accessible. Since the deal is still being wrapped up, it seems that Paramount+ may not get these newest episodes until after the rest of the content transitions to the platform in the U.S. Additionally, some fans have expressed other worries regarding this season.
In recent weeks, episodes from South Park have mysteriously disappeared from international versions of Paramount+ amidst negotiations about licensing deals. These discussions also caused a delay in the release of the new season. However, these episodes are gradually returning to international streaming platforms before their move to U.S. platforms. The uncertainty continues as there are questions about whether these episodes will eventually be banned from the service. Fortunately, it appears that this whole situation will soon reach its resolution.
