Recent seasons of South Park have dramatically changed the character of Butters, and he may not return to his earlier form. Season 28, continuing the episodes that began airing this summer, is moving the show toward its planned conclusion. This multi-season storyline seems to be wrapping up, but not without significant changes to all the main characters due to the events unfolding.
Butters has changed a lot over the seasons. He’s become much angrier and more reactive, especially to how girls are treating him. This is particularly evident in the latest episode where he uses AI to make hurtful videos, demonstrating that he’s no longer the innocent and naive character we first met.
South Park Has Changed Butters for the Worse
Oh man, the latest South Park episode, “Sora Not Sorry,” was wild! It picks up right where the season left off with poor Butters feeling totally used. He was really hoping things were going somewhere with Red, but it turns out she just wanted him to get her that Labubu doll. Now, usually Butters just shrugs off stuff like that, but this time he’s mad. And instead of just being sad, he decides to get back at her by making these fake videos of cartoons doing awful things to her. It’s classic South Park, taking something relatable and turning it up to eleven!
This ultimately causes Red to make her own false videos as payback, which leads to a town-wide investigation. Throughout it all, Butters consistently denies any involvement, hoping to avoid being discovered as the original source of the fake videos. This behavior is a surprising departure for the typically kind-hearted Butters we’ve seen in previous seasons, and it highlights how much the character has changed since the start of the pandemic.
When Did Butters Change?

Butters has noticeably changed over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, mirroring shifts happening in the world around him. It became clear that the events of the past few years were taking a toll on him, diminishing his typically innocent and optimistic outlook. While “The Pandemic Special” showed his simple desire for a fun experience at Build-a-Bear go wrong, the change was already beginning earlier, in Season 20 with the episode “Wieners Out,” ultimately leading to him appearing like a completely different character in “South ParQ Vaccination Special.”
After his girlfriend breaks up with him, he reacts by starting a bizarre protest – dropping his pants in public. While it seemed silly, this was a sign of a bigger change in his character. He’s no longer the easygoing guy who just accepts things; now he gets upset and seeks revenge. This shift feels relevant to today’s world, but it’s sad because we used to love him as the underdog who always found a way to smile. He’s not that person anymore.
