Good news for fans of Mel Brooks’ classic comedy Spaceballs: a sequel is officially happening! After years of speculation, it’s been confirmed that a new movie is on its way, and the timing couldn’t be better for Hollywood. While some expected the sequel to be titled Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money (a joke from the original film), it will actually be called Spaceballs: The New One. The sequel will bring back many of the original cast members, and also introduce some fresh faces to the familiar galaxy far, far away.
Mel Brooks was Hollywood’s leading comedic satirist from the 1970s to the 1990s, but that type of humor has become rare in recent decades. While self-aware comedies still exist, few have reached the same level of acclaim as Brooksâ iconic films like Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. With adult comedies largely gone from theatersâreplaced by big-budget sequelsâgenuine satire and parody have become increasingly scarce. Thatâs why the release of Spaceballs: The New One feels particularly well-timed.
‘Spaceballs: The New One’ Is the Perfect Antidote for Soulless Hollywood Sequels

Since streaming became popular, we’re seeing fewer and fewer comedies made, and very few are released in theaters. People now prefer watching at home, so there’s little reason for comedies to draw audiences to cinemas. They aren’t made for the big screen experience like IMAX, spoilers aren’t a concern when watching at home, and they generally don’t feel like major events unless they star huge celebrities and are directed by well-known filmmakers. As a result, studios are focusing their money on large-scale blockbusters and sequels â movies that are more likely to make a lot of profit.
It’s no surprise that many sequels feel like they’re made just to make money. For every truly innovative film that excites both viewers and critics â like Project Hail Mary â there are several uninspired cash-ins, such as Disney’s live-action remakes, A Minecraft Movie, or The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Spaceballs: The New One has a chance to cleverly satirize Hollywood’s constant need for sequels, and early reports from CinemaCon 2026 suggest it does exactly that.
Mel Brooks’ Classic Type of Satire is Exactly What Hollywood Needs Right Now

Mel Brooks’ new movie, Spaceballs: The New One, promises to be just as satirical and funny as his previous work, and no one in Hollywood is safe from his jokes. At a CinemaCon presentation, a trailer was shown that poked fun at recent studio mergers, particularly the discussions between Paramount and Warner Bros., according to the LA Times. The trailer also playfully mocked popular franchises like Avatar, Harry Potter, and the newer Star Wars films.
With Hollywood focusing heavily on massive, high-budget films like Dune: Part Three, The Odyssey, and Avengers: Doomsday â all expected to earn over a billion dollars by 2026 â the upcoming Spaceballs: The New One feels particularly important. Hollywood needs a bit of gentle ribbing, and Mel Brooks is the perfect person to provide it, using satire to both entertain and encourage the industry to look at itself. While big blockbusters and sequels arenât going anywhere, a funny, self-aware film will be a welcome change of pace.
‘Spaceballs: The New One’ Has Even More Potential Than the Original Thanks to the Modern ‘Star Wars’ Sequels

I truly believe Spaceballs is one of the greatest comedies ever made, and it still holds up brilliantly today â I can watch it over and over and still laugh! That’s why I’m so excited about the possibility of Spaceballs: The New One. The original brilliantly spoofed Star Wars, but now they have so much more material to work with! Think about it â they can poke fun at the Star Wars prequels and the more recent sequels, both of which have sparked a lot of debate and criticism. It’s a perfect opportunity for even sharper satire and even more hilarious gags, and I think The New One could actually be even better than the original!
The first look at Spaceballs: The New One showed that Rick Moranisâ Dark Helmet has a new mask similar to Kylo Renâs. While the roles of new cast members like Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan haven’t been fully announced, they’re expected to parody characters from the newer Star Wars films. Lewis Pullman will play the son of Bill Pullmanâs Lone Starr, cleverly connecting the new movie to the Kylo Ren and Rey Skywalker storyline.
A new Spaceballs movie has a lot of promise, given the wealth of material to spoof after 40 years and changes in Hollywood. Mel Brooks would be 100 years old when it’s released, but with plenty of time for development, itâs likely to be very funny. In a time when comedies â and especially parodies â are rare, Brooksâ unique brand of satire could be as successful now as it was in 1987.
