Marvel is introducing a new villain, but surprisingly, not for the team many were expecting. Instead of revealing the main villain for the upcoming ‘Mutant Saga,’ they’re debuting one in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This move has left fans both intrigued and a bit puzzled. However, since Brand New Day is one of the last films in the current phase of Marvel movies, it appears this introduction is actually laying the groundwork for the next phase and its overarching villain.
Tramell Tillman will be playing William Metzger, a lesser-known villain from X-Men comics, in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Metzger leads Damage Control, a group opposed to mutants, and first appeared in X-Men: Children of the Atom #1 back in 1999, created by Joe Casey and Steve Rude. He was the leader of the Anti-Mutant Militia in the X-Men: Children of the Atom miniseries. According to sources at Nexus Point News, Tillman has also signed a contract for multiple films, potentially including Marvel Studios’ planned X-Men movies.
What Can We Expect from Brand New Day?

Following the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021, Marvel Studios announced Tom Holland would return for another three Spider-Man movies. The first of these, Brand New Day, will begin a new chapter for Peter Parker, showing him as a more grown-up and serious Spider-Man.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so excited to hear Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are returning for No Way Home! It’s great news that Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal will be back as Bruce Banner and Punisher – what a team-up! I’ve also heard whispers that they might be ditching the Smart Hulk persona and going back to a more aggressive, classic Hulk, which I’m really looking forward to seeing. And it’s a cool touch that Marvin Jones III, who voiced Tombstone in Into the Spider-Verse, will be playing him in this movie too!
Adding John Tillman to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting, particularly if he plays a villain. He’s well-known for his unsettling performance as Seth Milchik in the popular Apple TV+ series, Severance. He’s also appeared in films like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the series Hunters, Sweethearts, and Godfather of Harlem.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day drops into theaters on July 31st, 2026.
