Many worried this might push back the movie’s release date. However, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to premiere in just over a month, director Daniel Destin Cretton has shared that he never considered delaying the film.
On the Deadline Crew Call podcast, Phil Lord explained that when Holland injured himself, his primary concern wasn’t meeting a deadline or pushing back the release date. He emphasized that his focus was solely on Holland’s well-being, clarifying that managing dates is the studio’s responsibility, while the actors and the actual production process are his priority.
Look, when one of my actors gets injured, the first thing on my mind isn’t the movie’s release date – it’s their well-being. Honestly, my immediate concern was whether Tom was alright. I’ve really come to care for him, and seeing anyone get hurt on set is awful. The release schedule? That wasn’t crossing my mind. That’s more Sony’s department. My job is to make sure everyone is healthy and prepared to continue, and that’s what we focused on after a short pause. We regrouped and got right back to work.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Stayed on Track Even With Holland’s Injury
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently released on July 31st, it’s clear that taking a short break before returning to work proved successful for the film. However, what really stands out is how director Cretton handled a recent on-set injury. Considering the huge anticipation for the next Spider-Man movie, it’s understandable there would be concern about potential delays. In fact, when the injury first became public, many people – including us – wondered if it would push back the release date. On-set accidents can easily cause bigger problems and require stricter safety measures, so the concern was valid.
While an actor being unavailable can sometimes cause problems, film productions are usually able to work around short absences. If Tom Holland had been out for more than a few days, the team working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day likely would have found ways to keep filming without him. Luckily, that wasn’t necessary and production continued smoothly. The only thing that slightly delayed the release of Spider-Man was scheduling conflicts with Holland’s other summer film, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Originally planned for July 24th, Spider-Man‘s release date was moved back one week to July 31st to give enough time between both films and ensure IMAX screens were available.
