Filming for the first day of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been completed. Sony Pictures recently shared a behind-the-scenes sneak peek featuring lead actor Tom Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton (from Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) on the movie’s Scotland set. Here, Glasgow streets have been reimagined as New York City for a thrilling sequence involving tanks. In the video below, Holland, wearing the new Spider-Man suit, remarks, “Today marks my fourth day one on Spider-Man.
In this scenario, the actor Holland is portraying Spider-Man in a way that mirrors a spider’s agility as he interacts with an enthusiastic audience – “This is our first time having fans on set for the initial day,” the actor mentions – followed by his personal execution of stunts atop a moving tank, while wearing a safety harness.
The scene also includes a prolonged view of an enigmatic symbol etched onto the tank, which bears a striking resemblance to the menacing skull adornment donned by the Punisher during his reign as the Kingpin for the Hand – a secretive ninja clan who had conflicts with the gun-wielding vigilante in Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2. This symbol might be the reason behind the Japanese-themed aesthetic on Monica Avitto’s design concept board for her villain character.
The symbol could be signifying either Mr. Negative’s internal struggles (a group introduced during Spider-Man’s “Brand New Day” comic era) or Mephisto, the demonic entity whose actions with Peter Parker resulted in his identity being hidden again after the events of “One More Day.
The upcoming fourth Spider-Man film produced jointly by Sony and Marvel Studios is titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” This movie follows the previous installments, which include “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Jon Bernthal portrays Frank Castle/the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Michael Mando plays Mac Gargan/Scorpion, Zendaya stars as Michelle “MJ” Jones, and Jacob Batalon is back as Ned Leeds. Additionally, Sadie Sink from “Stranger Things” and Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear” have been cast in roles that are currently unspecified.
In a recent interview, Holland mentioned that due to COVID-19 restrictions, the last movie was primarily filmed on sets. He hinted at a shift towards traditional filmmaking methods for future projects, stating they’ll be taking advantage of actual locations instead. The reason for this change is that filming will commence in Glasgow.
It will seem as if I’m making ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ all over again, since it has been so long since I last did it, and I find that it’s going to feel like a refreshing change. Moreover, I believe the fans will be thrilled with what we are creating.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters July 31, 2026.
