While the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t consistently performing as strongly at the box office as it once did, Spider-Man remains a hugely popular character. The last Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, actually helped revive movie theaters after the pandemic, earning nearly $2 billion worldwide. Fans are really looking forward to the next installment, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, which is expected to be one of Marvel’s biggest films. The movie will feature returning actors like Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, as well as exciting new additions like Sadie Sink. Although fans are hoping for news, updates about the project won’t be revealed at this week’s New York Comic Con.
Sony Pictures has canceled its planned panel at New York Comic Con, which was set to take place on Saturday, October 11th. New York Comic Con announced the cancellation on its Instagram page, but didn’t explain why. This means fans likely won’t receive any news about *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* or *Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse* this weekend.
When Will We Get Our First Look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
With *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* currently being filmed, it’s unlikely an official trailer would have been released this weekend. However, Sony might have prepared a short preview for fans at a convention, similar to what studios sometimes do. When filming began, Sony was open about the project, even sharing a video from the first day on set. This was partly to control leaks of Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man costume, but also to give fans an early look. At the very least, convention attendees might have received an update on Holland’s recovery from a recent injury that briefly paused production.
I was really hoping to see something about *Brand New Day* at New York Comic Con, so it’s a bit disappointing it won’t be there. It makes me wonder when we’ll finally get a good first look at the movie, especially since it doesn’t come out until July. Sony has time to build up some hype, though! I’ve heard people speculating that the first trailer for *Avengers: Doomsday* might play before *Avatar: Fire and Ash* in December, but that feels like a different situation entirely. Different studios handle things differently, and *Doomsday* is a huge event – it makes sense to start building buzz early, a year before release. *Brand New Day* seems like a more straightforward sell – it’s another solo Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, which fans already love. But *Doomsday* needs to *introduce* Doctor Doom to the MCU and show us how all the pieces will fit together. It needs a longer build-up to really get everyone excited.
The last summer Spider-Man movie, *Spider-Man: Far From Home*, had its first trailer released in January 2019, half a year before the film hit theaters. Sony might do the same for the next Spider-Man movie, *Brand New Day*. Interestingly, *Far From Home* came out in the same year as an *Avengers* film, so Sony knows how to promote Spider-Man alongside big Marvel events. This time, though, *Doomsday* isn’t scheduled until December 2026, so Sony and Disney/Marvel could potentially coordinate a plan where *Brand New Day* gets the spotlight after the *Doomsday* trailer appears with *Avatar*.
Besides San Diego Comic-Con, other big pop culture events could be used to reveal a first look at the new Spider-Man movie later this year. CCXP, a convention in December, is a likely possibility. Marvel has used CCXP in the past to start promoting films like *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*, show early footage of *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, and promote *Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania*. Sony also held a *No Way Home* panel at CCXP just weeks before the film’s release, so they might have something similar planned for this year’s event.
