As a lifelong moviegoer, I’ve always found Spider-Man‘s powers to be wonderfully straightforward. He’s incredibly nimble, a fantastic climber, and, of course, shoots webs! Sure, he’s got extras like super strength and that amazing Spider-Sense that don’t come from actual spiders, but you can pretty quickly understand what he can do. Those core abilities are just perfect for the character, and that’s why they’ve stuck around for so long. Though, it’s also fun to see him get new gear or even team up with alien forces – he always manages to stay true to himself, even with all the upgrades.
Spider-Man’s newest ability is proving to be incredibly dangerous. In the current storyline, “Death Spiral,” Spider-Man, Venom, and Eddie Brock are caught in a deadly conflict with a new villain named Torment, who is targeting everyone they care about. Eddie Brock doesn’t realize that Carnage intentionally revealed the heroes’ identities to Torment, hoping to team up with him. After a brutal fight, an unexpected alliance has formed: Spider-Man has bonded with Carnage, and worryingly, Spider-Man may be losing control.
A Match Made in Hell

The story of Venom #257 began with Torment, possessed by Carnage, attacking the FEAST shelter and targeting Aunt May and Aunt Anna. Flash Thompson bravely tried to defend them, but even he couldn’t withstand Torment’s brutal attacks. Although Agent Anti-Venom was defeated, he managed to stall long enough for Spider-Man and Venom to arrive. While the heroes fought Torment, Carnage broke away to hunt down his targets, indiscriminately killing anyone who stood in his path, showing no mercy.
Torment’s relentless pursuit of a family’s destruction reached a breaking point with the complex ritual needed to finish the job. He defeated Venom, mortally wounded Peter, and cut off his connection to Carnage before going to kill the remaining family members himself. Left bleeding and near death, Spider-Man was offered a desperate bargain by Carnage: a chance to bond and potentially save everyone. With no other choice, Peter accepted, becoming a host for Carnage. Carnage, revitalized by the new connection, felt stronger than ever and ominously warned Spider-Man that they would never forget their actions.
The Deaths Just Keep Spiraling

The “Death Spiral” storyline is nearing its end, and the situation is dire. Spider-Man has been the only one trying to keep things from falling apart, consistently working to save lives. However, he’s now merged with Carnage, one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains. Carnage has already proven capable of overpowering both Spider-Man and Venom, and now he’s bonded with a host who possesses incredible strength – enough to lift an eighteen-wheeler. Given Spider-Man’s weakened mental and physical state after weeks of hardship, Carnage may be almost completely in control of his body.
Carnage will likely exploit Spider-Man’s inner demons, attempting to corrupt his strong moral principles. This will push Spider-Man to his mental limits, forcing him to consider taking a life to save countless others. While Spider-Man always strives to do the right thing, the threat to Aunt May – the most important person in his life – adds immense pressure. Carnage is skilled at manipulating people and unleashing their darkest sides, and Peter Parker is already physically and emotionally drained, making him vulnerable to Carnage’s influence.
It seems likely that Carnage will attempt to manipulate Spider-Man into killing Torment, and if Spider-Man can’t resist, MJ will need to help him regain control. Carnage might exploit any lingering feelings Spider-Man has for his ex, but MJ reminding Peter of their strong connection could be a turning point for both of them. There’s also a good chance Aunt May will discover Spider-Man and Torment’s secret identities when Spider-Man separates from the symbiote. Things could get very bad, but if Peter’s loved ones can help him overcome this, they could save everyone involved.
Venom #257 is on sale now!
I’m really curious to hear everyone’s thoughts – what level of destruction do you think Spider-Carnage could cause? Let’s discuss it over at the ComicBook Forum – I’ll be joining the conversation there, and I hope to see you all there too!
