Spider-Man consistently defeats opponents much more powerful than himself, showcasing a surprising level of strength. Though he’s often portrayed as a supporting hero alongside characters like Iron Man and Captain America, Spider-Man is actually capable of going head-to-head with Marvel’s strongest heroes. He’s even fought the Hulk, proving he’s far more powerful than many realize, even if he doesn’t always demonstrate his full potential in battle due to holding back.
Here are five Spider-Man battles where he unexpectedly delivered a harsh beating to his opponents and won decisively.
5) Spider-Man Beats Phoenix Force Colossus & Magik

As a movie critic, I have to say the Avengers Vs. X-Men storyline really surprised me with Spider-Man’s role. Honestly, pitting him against members of the Phoenix Five – Colossus and Magik, specifically – seemed like a mismatch. The Phoenix Force is just that powerful. But what made this fight so compelling wasn’t brute strength; it was Spider-Man’s wit. He didn’t overpower them, he outsmarted them. It was fantastic to see him use his intelligence and quick thinking to take down two incredibly powerful opponents, even while they were fueled by the Phoenix Force. It proved Spider-Man is more than just muscle; he’s a genuine strategist.
In the ninth issue of Avengers Vs. X-Men, Spider-Man found himself facing off against Colossus and Magik. Magik intended to deliver a fatal blow, but Colossus was holding back. Spider-Man cleverly tricked them by pointing out that whoever defeated the other would gain more power from the Phoenix Force. When the Avengers arrived to rescue him, they found Spider-Man standing over an unconscious Colossus and Magik, with the Phoenix Force having abandoned them both.
4) Spider-Man Beat The X-Men in Secret Wars

Spider-Man once faced off against the entire X-Men team and managed to defeat them, an event that occurred during the original Secret Wars comic series. In Secret Wars, a powerful being called the Beyonder brought together heroes and villains from Earth and forced them to battle each other, promising the victor their heart’s desire. The X-Men, however, didn’t trust the other heroes and decided to fight on their own.
The conflict occurred in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #3. It began when Spider-Man overheard Professor X stating they would align with Magneto. Mistaking this as a betrayal, Spider-Man immediately attacked. Professor X instructed the X-Men to restrain him, but Spider-Man surprisingly defeated them all and ran off to alert the other heroes. Even though Xavier mentally blocked Spider-Man’s memory, the fact that he managed to overpower the entire X-Men team was remarkable.
3) Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut

Spider-Man faced many powerful enemies, but the Juggernaut was likely unbeatable. While Spider-Man had defeated villains like Rhino, the Juggernaut’s immense strength, fueled by the mystical power of Cyttorak, made him unstoppable. This dynamic was famously explored in the classic Amazing Spider-Man issues #228-229, known as “Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut.”
The story begins with Madame Web having a vision of a massive attack and requesting Spider-Man’s protection from the Juggernaut. After the Juggernaut nearly kills her while trying to kidnap her, Spider-Man resolves to stop him. A fight ensues where Spider-Man endures all of the Juggernaut’s powerful hits, but continues to battle on. Ultimately, he cleverly lures the Juggernaut into a trap – freshly poured cement that hardens and immobilizes him.
2) Spider-Man Beats Down Firelord

Spider-Man frequently takes on opponents much stronger than himself, and his battle with Firelord was particularly challenging. Firelord, whose real name is Pyreus Kril, was once a Nova Centurion before becoming Galactus’s herald following Air-Walker’s demise. Galactus later released him from his duties after they defeated Ego, but Pyreus kept his incredible powers. He reappeared on Earth in Amazing Spider-Man #269.
He struggled to connect with others, and people misinterpreted his awkwardness as hostility, even attacking him, assuming he was a threat. Spider-Man arrived, thinking he was fighting a villain because he didn’t understand what was happening. Though the man was clearly deteriorating, Spider-Man continued the fight and ultimately knocked him unconscious. It was a particularly decisive victory for Spider-Man.
1) Spider-Man Brutalizes Kingpin in Back in Black

The “Back in Black” storyline unfolded during the Civil War event. It began when Iron Man persuaded Spider-Man to reveal his identity. This decision had devastating consequences, as Kingpin then ordered an attempt on Spider-Man’s life, resulting in Aunt May being shot. This event is remembered as one of Spider-Man’s most controversial stories, eventually leading to a deal with Mephisto in “One More Day.” Prior to that fateful agreement, Spider-Man severely injured Wilson Fisk in a violent confrontation.
Discovering that Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, was responsible for the shooting of Aunt May, Spider-Man sought him out in prison, determined to get revenge. The ensuing fight was one of his most intense and violent. While Kingpin anticipated a confrontation, he underestimated Spider-Man’s full strength. Peter Parker, who had previously restrained himself, unleashed his fury, verbally taunting Fisk as a “fat man with an attitude” before savagely beating him in front of other inmates. He even webbed down Kingpin’s throat as a chilling warning that if May didn’t survive, he would return to finish the job. This was a particularly dark and brutal moment for Spider-Man.
