Spider-Man’s Biggest Power-Up Meant He Could Take Out the Hulk

The upcoming storyline in Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature a return to the Hulk’s more aggressive side, putting him on a collision course with Spider-Man. This isn’t a new idea – the comics have often shown Spider-Man trying to avoid a confrontation with an enraged Hulk, knowing he can’t win in a direct fight. Spider-Man always has to use his intelligence and speed to escape. However, in a 1989 comic book arc, Spider-Man gained a significant power boost that unexpectedly allowed him to easily defeat one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes.

Spider-Man has gained many different powers over time, far beyond those of a typical spider. While usually no match for the Hulk, even with these boosts, in Amazing Spider-Man #328, he finally found a way to stand a chance by becoming Captain Universe.

Captain Universe Spider-Man Was Too Much for The Hulk

In the “Acts of Vengeance” storyline, Spider-Man and Dr. Max Lubisch were building a device to harness energy from other dimensions. As expected, the machine malfunctioned, and Spider-Man shielded Lubisch, becoming infused with a powerful cosmic force called the Enigma Force. This force bonds with heroes, turning them into the incredibly powerful Captain Universe. Like other hosts, Spider-Man gained almost limitless strength, invulnerability, the ability to fly, manipulate objects with his mind, project energy, and gain cosmic awareness. With these new abilities, he easily defeated villains such as Doctor Doom, Magneto, and Graviton, but his greatest test came when facing the Hulk.

At this point, the Hulk wasn’t his usual self – he was the Grey Hulk, more cunning, mean-spirited, and motivated by money. When Sebastian Shaw, head of the Hellfire Club, offered the Hulk a lot of cash to take care of Spider-Man, the Hulk quickly accepted. But the fight didn’t go as planned. Spider-Man, boosted by the power of Captain Universe and his already impressive speed and intelligence, easily avoided the Hulk’s attacks and then powerfully countered, smashing the Hulk through multiple buildings. He finished the fight with an uppercut that sent the Hulk flying into space! After Spider-Man brought him back to Earth, the Hulk, though reluctant, admitted defeat and surprisingly refused to collect the reward money Shaw had offered.

The Hulk had never been defeated so easily, particularly not by Spider-Man, who was usually far weaker. By temporarily gaining the power of Captain Universe, Spider-Man was finally able to subdue the Hulk. Although Spider-Man eventually lost this power after using it to stop a nuclear disaster caused by the Tri-Sentinel, he proved to be a remarkably responsible hero while wielding such immense cosmic power. Unlike the Hulk, who was consumed by his strength, Spider-Man remained true to his character and showed restraint, even offering mercy to his foes.

Even though we likely won’t see this in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, it’s still impressive to remember a time when Spider-Man actually defeated the usually unbeatable Hulk in a direct fight.
