Welcome to this column, which comes out every two weeks! Here, I’ll be sharing a great comic, series, event, or storyline – something both longtime readers will love revisiting and new readers can discover.
The initial trailer for the new Spider-Man movie just released, promising a thrilling, action-filled story focused on Peter Parker’s life as a street-level hero. Following the events of No Way Home, where everyone forgot Peter Parker’s identity, he’s starting a new chapter centered on heroism. The trailer included several moments fans will recognize from the comics, which we’ll be discussing in the coming weeks. Today, though, we’re focusing on a possible reference to the 2005 Spider-Man story, The Other.
Spider-Man is experiencing another evolution of his powers and body through genetic mutation, leading to abilities like naturally-grown web-shooters, similar to a transformation he’s undergone before in the comics. A particularly significant instance of this happened during the storyline The Other: Evolve or Die, created by writers Peter David, Reginald Hudlin, and J. Michael Straczynski, and it also introduced dangerous new villains to Spider-Man’s universe.
The Other Doubled Down on Spider-Man’s Totemic Origins As He Faced His End
In the storyline The Other, Spider-Man faced a major challenge thanks to the work of the writing team and artists like Mike Wieringo, Pat Lee, and Mike Deodato Jr. This event unfolded across several monthly Spider-Man comics, appearing in weekly parts within Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man issues 1-4, Marvel Knights: Spider-Man issues 19-22, and Amazing Spider-Man issues 525-528.
The story of The Other takes place when Spider-Man was living with his Aunt May and wife MJ in Avengers Tower. A new, dangerous mutation threatened his life, and both his family and fellow superheroes worked together to find answers. But during The Other, Spider-Man faced more than just a health crisis.
A major comic book storyline showed Spider-Man suffering a devastating loss, ultimately leading to his death. He was killed by a new, incredibly powerful villain named Morlun, who posed a threat to all versions of Spider-Man across different universes. Morlun was a vampiric being who gained power by feeding on the unique energy that fueled Spider-Man and his alternate selves throughout the multiverse.
The films have brought more attention to a storyline that began in the comics, specifically an event following the story arc called The Other. While the films borrowed ideas from J. Michael Straczynski’s earlier comics, The Other established key details that could shape Spider-Man’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like giving him new and improved powers.
The most significant part of the The Other storyline is the introduction of Morlun, the villain who originally ‘killed’ Spider-Man. But it’s what happened after—Spider-Man’s return and the new powers and enemies that came with it—that truly makes this story important. It’s a must-read for both longtime comic book fans and those following the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially given the hints about the multiverse in the latest movie.
Brand New Day’s Trailer Teased Several Key Moments From The Other
Okay, so the trailer showed Spider-Man figuring out his new powers, and honestly, it reminded me a lot of The Other storyline. In that comic, Spidey got help from some super-smart friends to figure things out. Now that Tony Stark’s gone and we haven’t really seen Reed Richards join the main MCU timeline after First Steps, it seems like Bruce Banner/Hulk is going to be the one filling that role in the movie, helping Peter out with the science stuff.
The idea of Spider-Man creating webs organically and emerging from a web-like cocoon first showed up in the comic storyline The Other, though it’s not unique to that story. The trailer introduces new characters, including villains and anti-heroes like The Punisher, which differs from The Other. However, there’s a mysterious element in the trailer that might hint at the main villain from the original comic event.
A quick glimpse of a mysterious figure in a hood, combined with a leaked trailer and a lost voice recording, suggests we might see characters from the The Other storyline – or later stories connected to it. Some fans speculate that actor Vella Lovell could be playing a female version of the villain Morlun, or perhaps one of his relatives from The Inheritors.
After these events, Spider-Man encountered a villain called Ero. Another character, who showed up separately, also became important in the wider Spider-Verse storyline. Everything started with the surprising death and resurrection of Spider-Man in the comic book series The Other, which might give fans a head start in understanding Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The comic book story arc, The Other, dramatically changed Spider-Man’s direction, giving him new abilities and introducing dangerous enemies that shaped his adventures for years. It may even inspire future Spider-Man movies, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
