The new Spider-Noir show coming to Prime Video is a bold move, and it could be exactly what Sony’s struggling Spider-Man Universe needs to turn things around. The SSU has been a major disappointment since the boom of interconnected movie universes began, and hasn’t quite lived up to expectations.

Following the huge success of Venom, Sony started making several movies based on Spider-Man villains, but without including Spider-Man himself. These included a fairly standard superhero film called Morbius, a Madame Web movie that felt like a copy of the early 2000s Final Destination series, and a Kraven the Hunter film that left out the iconic game he’s known for pursuing.

Over the last ten years, Sony’s biggest achievement has been its Spider-Man films. The Spider-Verse movies have not only changed animated filmmaking, but they’ve also offered a new take on superhero stories and introduced audiences to compelling characters like Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, who hadn’t previously received much attention.

I’ve been so excited to see what Sony does with the Spider-Verse concept, especially after its initial success! It felt like they were hesitant to really build on that world, instead focusing on more Venom movies and giving solo films to lesser-known villains. But with Spider-Noir finally arriving, it feels like Sony is listening to fans like me and delivering what we’ve been waiting for: more Spider-Verse stories, a fresh take on superhero movies, and, most importantly, Spider-Man!

Spider-Noir Will Redeem Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Following the disappointing three-year run of Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter – all notably poorly made with obvious audio issues – Spider-Noir has the potential to improve Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (though the name still feels awkward). Nicolas Cage will return as his trenchcoat-wearing, detective version of Spider-Man, originally seen in the Spider-Verse films.

While not the identical character across all universes, this project captures everything that made Nicolas Cage’s voice acting for Spider-Man Noir so compelling and brings it to a longer, live-action format. His dark, tough, and classic detective-style performance is perfect for a spin-off that blends the exciting feel of old detective stories with the fantastical elements of comic books.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Needs A Spider-Man

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has been missing a key ingredient: Spider-Man himself. It’s strange that the studio owning the rights to Spider-Man built a cinematic universe around him without actually including the character, and future film historians will likely find this decision puzzling.

As a huge movie fan, I just don’t get Sony’s strategy with their Spider-Man universe. They had so many options – bring back Tobey or Andrew, finally give us a live-action Miles Morales, or even just make completely new Spider-Man stories. But instead, they went with a Kraven movie without Spider-Man and, well, the less said about the Jared Leto Morbius movie, the better. Honestly, if Sony hired a consultant to fix what’s going wrong, that consultant’s only job could be to say, ‘You need Spider-Man!’ and they’d deserve a million bucks for it.

Sony needs to keep Spider-Man stories going in their Spider-Man Universe, whether that means continuing the adventures of Garfield’s Spider-Man after No Way Home or starting a new series with Miles Morales. Even though Spider-Noir has a very different look and feel, it still features a Spider-Man fighting crime and swinging through New York City.

Spider-Noir Is Doing Something Radically Different With The Spider-Man Franchise

Spider-Noir offers a fresh take on the Spider-Man story with its historical setting, detective theme, and older version of the hero. This is particularly promising because the same team previously delivered the innovative and acclaimed film, Into the Spider-Verse.

The release of Spider-Noir is unique. Prime Video will offer each episode in two versions: a black-and-white version with a vintage, 1940s film style, and a fully colored version reminiscent of classic Hollywood films.

This is the first time a movie has been released with both color and black-and-white versions available from the start. While some films like Logan and Mad Max: Fury Road have had black-and-white versions released later as special cuts, this is a completely new approach. Beyond that, this project is also the first live-action installment in the Spider-Verse series, and it marks Nicolas Cage’s debut as a lead actor in a television show.

The trailer, available in both color and black and white, shows Nicolas Cage giving a truly committed performance in this series. He’s fully embracing the classic detective style, channeling Humphrey Bogart. While Spider-Noir features more action than traditional 1940s and 50s noir films, Cage acts as if he’s starring in a classic like The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye, or Chinatown—and this dedication could lead to one of his most memorable roles.

Sony had several predictable choices for a live-action Spider-Man streaming show. They could have spent a fortune to bring back Tom Holland, or introduced a new face as Miles Morales. However, they’ve opted for something unexpected: a black-and-white detective story featuring Nicolas Cage.

Sony Needs To Take More Big Swings Like Spider-Noir

Sony has been most successful when it takes chances with its Spider-Man characters. The innovative Spider-Verse films and the collaboration with Marvel Studios prove that bigger risks lead to bigger rewards. Spider-Noir could be exactly what Sony needs – it’s their most daring creative attempt and potentially their riskiest commercial venture yet.
