The third Spider-Verse movie is generating a lot of buzz thanks to a significant change for its release in theaters. Sony Pictures Animation plans to continue the popular animated series in 2027 with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The film promises everything fans love about the series – amazing animation, a huge cast of Marvel characters, and a fantastic soundtrack – but with one key difference.
The upcoming film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will be the first in the Spider-Verse trilogy to fully utilize the expanded aspect ratio available in IMAX theaters. When a fan asked on X if Spider-Verse 3 would also take advantage of this expanded ratio, executive producer Christopher Miller confirmed that it will, stating, “Heck yeah, we will:”

The announcement thrilled fans of the Spider-Verse. Brandon Davis from Phase Hero was one of many who expressed their excitement online, calling it “a huge win (literally).”
The previous Spider-Verse films were shown in IMAX, but they didn’t fully utilize the IMAX screen, leaving black bars on the top and bottom. Beyond the Spider-Verse will be different – it will expand to fill the entire IMAX screen for a more immersive experience.
This adjustment can make the image appear even more expansive on IMAX screens, which are already quite large, creating a greater sense of scale than you typically find in other widescreen films shown in IMAX.
The highly anticipated conclusion to the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to release on June 18, 2027. The film continues the story from Across the Spider-Verse, where Miles Morales, voiced by Shameik Moore, found himself stuck in another dimension. Why The Spider-Verse 3 IMAX Change Is a Big Deal
While some fans might not think much of this news about Spider-Verse 3, it could actually be a big sign of how Sony Pictures is approaching the movie.
Following the unexpected success of Into the Spider-Verse, which became one of the most critically acclaimed superhero films ever, Sony invested more heavily in the series. This resulted in the sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, earning almost $700 million worldwide.
Since Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to conclude the Spider-Verse movie trilogy, it’s logical that Sony Pictures would aim to make it a truly spectacular finale, giving the series a fitting conclusion.
Considering how well-received previous installments have been, most people expect Beyond to receive similar praise.
Completely adapting Spider-Verse 3 for IMAX could subtly enhance the theatrical experience, potentially leading to even higher box office revenue than Across the Spider-Verse.
