Splitgate is getting a fresh start later this month with a new name and image, and it looks like the developers are really listening to their community. The first-person shooter market is very competitive, with huge games like Call of Duty and Battlefield dominating the scene. Even established franchises like Halo are finding it tough to stay relevant, which makes it even harder for new shooters to succeed. Breaking through requires something truly exceptional. These days, with many games offering free-to-play options, quality is more important than ever.
I remember when Splitgate came out in 2021 – it was exactly what I was hoping for! It took that classic arena shooter feeling, like Halo, and mixed it with this really cool portal mechanic. You could do some seriously amazing things, like teleport around the map or even shoot enemies through portals. It totally changed up the usual shooter gameplay. But sadly, it didn’t last long. The developers decided to jump straight into making Splitgate 2. It finally came out earlier this year, and honestly, it was a bit of a letdown. There was some initial excitement, but things quickly went downhill with some questionable updates and weird choices from the developers. It just wasn’t the game everyone was hoping for, unfortunately.
Splitgate 2 Relaunches as Splitgate: Arena Reloaded This Month
1047 Games listened to player feedback and decided to completely rework Splitgate 2. They’ve rebuilt the game from scratch to better meet what fans were hoping for, and it’s now called Splitgate: Arena Reloaded. You can download and play it for free starting December 17th on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
Josh Watson, Design Director at 1047 Games and formerly the Game Director of Rocket League, explained that Splitgate was created as a tribute to the classic arena shooters they all enjoyed playing. The team has been completely rebuilding the game, using the best elements from both Splitgate 1 and Splitgate 2, improving what worked well, and removing what didn’t.
We’ve listened to player feedback and used playtests to improve Splitgate, leading to the version launching on the 17th. We’re thrilled to be bringing it back and hope you enjoy the changes! You can find a preview of what’s new below.
- Removed Factions, Abilities, and select equipment to refocus on classic arena combat
- Rebuilt progression from the ground up and overhauled the Ranked system
- Introduced 5 new, and 6 fully-reworked maps, 3 new Primary Weapons and 1 new Power Weapon: the Railgun
- New Arena modes, playlist selection, and a true Classic Arena mode with even starts and powerups
