Spy x Family Studio Shares Troubling Financial Report

Over the years, I’ve been utterly captivated by the groundbreaking work of Wit Studio – a powerhouse that’s been shaking up the anime world! Their impressive portfolio includes blockbuster series like Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan, Ranking of Kings, The Great Pretender, and many more. Excitingly, they’re set to collaborate with CloverWorks once again this year for the much-anticipated return of the Forger family in Spy x Family season three. However, it’s a bit disheartening to hear about their recent financial struggles, as outlined in a recent report.

The latest financial data reveals that by the end of fiscal year 2024-2025, Wit Studio experienced a significant surge in revenue, approximately 4.5 Billion Yen or $30 million USD, representing a 7.1% growth compared to the preceding year. Regrettably, this positive development was not enough to offset an operating loss of 150 million Yen ($1 million USD) and a total loss of 170 million Yen ($1.15 million USD). In contrast, during the previous fiscal year, Wit Studio recorded a total profit of 271 million yen or $1.8 million USD. Therefore, it appears that Wit Studio’s earnings have diminished this year. One possible explanation could lie in the selection of anime productions released by the studio, which might provide additional insights into why this year’s report presents less favorable news for the anime production company.

Wit’s Financial Troubles

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the remarkable work Wit Studio has produced over the years, particularly with masterpieces like Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Spy x Family. However, some might argue that their recent projects haven’t quite reached the same heights as these classics. Nevertheless, this financial report period has seen the studio releasing a series of unique anime properties, such as True Samurai Legend Yaiba, The Demon Tower Master Who Became The Grand Duchess, Suicide Squad Isekai, Moonrise, and lastly, Spring Summer Autumn Winter Agent: Spring Dance. Fortunately, there are more exciting projects in the pipeline from Wit Studio that promise to create a storm in the anime world soon.

In October, the third season of “Spy x Family” is due to debut, featuring some of the most significant storylines involving the Forger family yet. Despite this ongoing collaboration with CloverWorks being one of Wit Studio’s main projects, another major production remains unannounced regarding its release date. The announcement of a remake for “One Piece,” set for 2024, promises to stick more closely to the original manga than the current adaptation by Toei Animation. Working together with Netflix, this reimagining of the Straw Hat Pirates series could significantly increase Wit Studio’s profile, given the popularity of the shonen genre. Here’s hoping we can enjoy this remake on Netflix sooner rather than later!
