Square Enix is known for many popular games, including long-running series like *Dragon Quest* and *Final Fantasy*. They’ve released several remakes of these games, most recently *Final Fantasy VII Remake* and its follow-up, *Rebirth*. While players anticipate the next installment in the *Final Fantasy VII* remake project, many are also hoping to see a remake of *Final Fantasy IX*. However, some fans believe an even older title deserves the remake treatment.
Square Enix has addressed the possibility of remaking *Final Fantasy VI*. In a recent interview with *Windows Central*, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of *Final Fantasy VII Remake*, hinted that *Final Fantasy VI* could be the next game in line for a remake – a title many fans consider even better than *Final Fantasy VII*. While he didn’t confirm a remake is happening, Hamaguchi revealed that *Final Fantasy VI* is his personal favorite in the series, sparking excitement among players. He stated that if resources were unlimited, he’d love to lead the remake project.
Whether a full remake of *Final Fantasy VI* will actually happen is uncertain, and fans probably shouldn’t expect it soon. If Square Enix were to tackle such a big project, it would likely be after they finish the *Final Fantasy VII* remake trilogy. However, given the positive reception to *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* and Square Enix’s renewed interest in turn-based gameplay, this possibility shouldn’t be dismissed.
If *Final Fantasy VI* were to be remade, it doesn’t need to be as large in scope as the remakes of *Final Fantasy VII*. A better approach might be to use the beautiful HD-2D style seen in *Octopath Traveler*. Since *Final Fantasy VI* was originally a 2D game, this style would be a natural fit and a nice throwback. We’ve seen a lot of developers recently embrace retro styles, with games returning to older 8- and 16-bit graphics, and even 2D art. Square Enix could really benefit from this approach, especially for a major release like *Final Fantasy VI*. The success of *Ninja Gaiden Ragebound* earlier this year shows how well this type of revival can work.
We’re currently seeing a lot of game remakes and remasters, particularly from Square Enix. This is partly because it takes less time and effort to update an existing game than to create a brand new one – many of the core elements are already finished, even if they need modernizing. While a game like *Final Fantasy VI* would require significant work to meet today’s standards, it would likely be a worthwhile project for Square Enix.
