Later this month, on February 27th, Square Enix and Limited Run Games will bring a classic PlayStation 1 game from 2001 to new platforms like Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. This marks the first time the action-adventure game has been released on anything other than the original PS1, where it’s been exclusive for over 20 years. Currently, there are no plans to release it on Nintendo Switch 2 or Xbox.
Sushee and Untold Tales are reviving the classic game Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, originally created by Kronos Digital Entertainment and Eidos Interactive. While it’s not a complete remake or remaster, this 25-year-old game is returning with updated features and improvements as a more polished version of the original PlayStation 1 title. This follows their surprise release of the first Fear Effect game last year.
A PS1 Action-Adventure Classic
The original Fear Effect game launched in 2000 for PlayStation and received a solid 85 score on GameRankings. Though it wasn’t considered a contender for game of the year, it was definitely one of the better-rated titles. This led to a sequel in 2001 that was similarly well-received. However, the series then went dormant until 2018, when Fear Effect Senda arrived as a direct continuation of the first game. Sadly, the game was poorly received by critics and players alike, and both developer Sunshee Entertainment and publisher Forever Entertainment saw the series put on hold once again.
What’s New With the Game
Even though this is a remake, fans of the original game will find some welcome changes. These include updated 3D visuals with Motion FX technology, eight brand new environments to explore, and a smoother experience thanks to the removal of loading screens after you die.
At first glance, this re-release might seem unexpected, but it makes more sense when you remember its original game was re-released last year. Classic games are popular right now – we’re seeing a lot of ports, remasters, and remakes, especially for PlayStation 1 titles. In fact, another PS1 game from Square Enix came back just last month.
The price of the upcoming re-release of Fear Effect 2 on PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam is currently unknown, but it’s expected to be around $9.99, similar to the price of the first game’s re-release.
