The future of Star Trek is a bit uncertain right now. With several shows cancelled and little news from Paramount, fans are stuck in a waiting period. This has led to a lot of interest in ideas that never made it to the screen – pitches and concepts that were rejected over the years. We all know about Andy Weir’s proposal, but there’s much more, like the potential of shows called Star Trek: Legacy or Star Trek: United. These unproduced ideas may never happen, but they offer a fascinating look at what Star Trek could have been. And now, another previously unknown concept has surfaced.
A canceled storyline for Star Trek: Enterprise Season 5 could have expanded on the history of the Borg. While the show’s creator, Manny Coto, planned to focus on the Romulan War and the formation of the Federation, writers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens proposed a different direction. They recently shared at a Trek Talks 5 panel—along with Brannon Braga, Andre Bormanis, Michael Sussman, and Phyllis Strong—that they pitched bringing back Alice Krige, who played the Borg Queen, as the Head of Starfleet Medical in the 22nd century, ultimately choosing to become the Borg Queen.
We had an idea for a new Borg series that we thought would be fascinating. It would feature Alice Krige as the head of Starfleet Medical, and explore the story of someone willingly joining the Borg Collective. The show would delve into the character’s motivations and thought process, ultimately revealing how she becomes the Borg Queen. We believed this perspective would be a compelling and unique angle.
Why The Borg Queen Origin Was Rejected (& What We Lost)

Braga suggested that was a great idea and they should have considered it, but Garfield Reeves-Stevens explained why it was rejected: Manny wanted the Enterprise series to feel independent and avoid relying too heavily on previous shows. Braga pointed out that it would have been really interesting to see Alice Krige reprise her role before becoming the Queen, especially because the storyline could have explored some fascinating, previously untold parts of Star Trek history.
The Borg Queen’s backstory could have been much more revealing. Instead of simply being one of a nameless species, the show could have connected her directly to the very beginning of Starfleet, suggesting the Federation’s biggest enemy actually came from within its own ranks. This would have made her later obsession with Picard even more meaningful. Most importantly, we could have learned whether the Queen was a pre-existing leader the Collective chose, or if her own personality significantly shaped the Collective after she joined – solving the mystery of whether she led or was led.
Beyond that, the story aimed to delve into the surprisingly appealing side of the Borg’s collective consciousness – something Star Trek hasn’t really explored. Traditionally, being assimilated by the Borg is shown as a terrible loss of self, but this backstory would have shown a gifted scientist choosing to join, believing it offered a kind of flawless order. The Borg always claim resistance is pointless, and this would have flipped that idea on its head. By focusing on the Starfleet Medical Chief and her reasons for joining, we’d have seen a completely new perspective. It’s true that making a villain more sympathetic could have been risky, but her choice would have been voluntary, unlike the forced assimilation of characters like Darth Vader, making her story unique.
Manny Coto didn’t want to focus too much on past storylines, but exploring the Borg from a new angle would have been a great move for the series. Enterprise could have shown the Borg not just as a powerful enemy, but as a result of a woman’s desire for something different.
