Season three of the show featured the return of iconic starships like the USS Voyager and HMS Bounty. However, the most notable new development is a blossoming romance between two characters: Jack Crusher and Sidney LaForge. These characters, with their connections to established legacy characters, are now the focus of the franchise, especially after Paramount scaled back plans for expanding the streaming universe that initially introduced them.
From the beginning, Star Trek has blended a hopeful view of the future with dramatic, romantic storylines. While The Next Generation toned down the romance a bit, focusing on slow-developing relationships, the show always featured passionate connections – like the complicated history between Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard. Sidney and Jack, however, have formed a deeper bond than their parents ever did, forged through their shared experience of surviving the Borg attack. These two characters have the potential to revitalize Star Trek, offering fans a connection to the series’ legacy, exciting new adventures, and a compelling love story.
Jack Crusher and Sidney LaForge Bonded Deeply Over Shared Trauma
Growing up, I always imagined Sidney LaForge had a pretty great life, you know, with his dad being Geordie and all. But even with all the adventures he and his mom had traveling the galaxy, nothing could have prepared them for what happened in Picard Season 3! Seriously, it was a whole new level of intense, and I don’t think anything in his privileged upbringing could have really gotten him ready for that.
The fight with Vadic’s crew was probably the first time she’d ever been in a life-or-death situation. Jack, using his Borg-enhanced mental powers, could read her thoughts and even control her actions. This connection was deeper than any typical romance, and that’s what made their relationship, nicknamed “LaCrush,” so compelling.
Their relationship began with a difficult situation. A hidden link to the Borg allowed Jack and Sidney to connect mentally, letting Jack hear her thoughts. He was essentially asking her on a date – given they were stuck on a stolen spaceship – and she wished he’d at least offer a comforting touch. When he did reach out and touch her hand, she was startled.
Many people possess psychic abilities, but Jack’s abilities, granted by Borg implants, were exceptional within the established story. We don’t know how Sidney feels about Jack being able to read her thoughts due to her hidden Borg implant, but Jack ultimately used this connection to save her.
Picard skillfully developed the connection between these characters, moving it beyond simple flirting into a more profound, yet platonic, relationship. Both come from families with strong legacies in Starfleet – Jack’s even more so, being the son of two renowned figures. Their parents disapprove of their budding connection, which ironically draws them closer. The audience isn’t looking for a dramatic love confession; instead, the subtle history and gradually growing affection between them feels like a promising foundation for future storylines.
Jack Crusher and Sidney La Forge Have a Connection to the Legacy and an Open Future
Bringing in the children of the original Next Generation crew really emphasized the show Picard‘s theme of legacy – what we leave behind. But it wasn’t just about family ties; the story demanded that Jean-Luc and Beverly’s relationship was ultimately unsuccessful, making a healthy connection impossible from the start.
Modern Star Trek doesn’t rely on keeping potential couples separated to create drama anymore. The ending of Picard showed Jack and Sidney both working on the USS Enterprise-G, which provides a great opportunity for them to become friends – or even more than friends.
The dynamic between Jack Crusher and Sidney La Forge has already inspired a wealth of fan-created content, and it’s precisely the type of story Paramount needs to propel Star Trek forward. A series or standalone story focusing on these characters could connect the established heroes with the future of the franchise.
The actors had wonderful chemistry with each other, delivering performances that were both delicate and full of depth. Their connection with the returning cast members – LeVar Burton, Patrick Stewart, and Gates McFadden – felt incredibly genuine, making their on-screen family dynamic truly believable.
While romance wasn’t a strong suit in older Star Trek series, newer shows have improved. Discovery featured compelling relationships like Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker, and Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber. Picard attempted a meaningful romance for Jean-Luc with Laris, though it didn’t last. A particularly promising storyline for future Star Trek series could center on a love story between Jack Crusher and Sidney LaForge.
As a lifelong fan, I’m really excited by these two characters. They feel like a genuine breath of fresh air, and I instantly connected with them. While either one could carry a story on their own, they’re just better together. Continuing their adventures after Picard feels like a smart way for Star Trek to explore new territory – to boldly go, as they say – while still honoring what we already love about the franchise.
Honestly, since the SkyDance deal, it feels like Star Trek is just…stuck. We haven’t gotten a single new show announced, which is a bummer. I really think Star Trek thrives on TV, not just as one-off movies. And please, no more prequels like Year One or stories set way, way in the future like Starfleet Academy. What I’d love to see is something that continues the story from where Picard ended – picking up in the 25th century. That feels like the natural next step!
Characters like Jack Crusher and Sidney La Forge are a great fit for the show’s new direction. They have ties to the series’ history, but also a lot of potential for future storylines. Fans are also eager to see them develop romantic relationships, just like they enjoyed with previous characters from across all the different eras of Star Trek.
You can now buy all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard on DVD and Blu-ray, or watch it digitally. It’s also streaming on Paramount+.
