Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! The show subtly suggests a dark event may have impacted the career of Starfleet’s newest captain. In the premiere, directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Gaia Violo, the USS Athena narrowly survives an attack by Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) and limps into San Francisco on Earth.
As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m already hooked on the new series! It opens with the cadets of Starfleet Academy just starting to settle in, getting to know their classmates and instructors. And get this – Robert Picardo is back as The Doctor! Apparently, the Emergency Medical Hologram from Voyager has really climbed the ranks and is now the Chief Medical Officer aboard Captain Ake’s ship. But things quickly go south when the USS Athena gets ambushed by Nus Braka and the Venari Ral, who are after the ship’s warp drive. It’s a really exciting setup!
The Doctor, a teacher at Starfleet Academy, is back for season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy. He continued to serve as a mentor, alongside Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), to the young and inexperienced crew of the USS Protostar, including Dal R’El (Brett Gray) and Gwyndala (Ella Purnell).
The Doctor’s Reaction To Captain Gwyndala’s Name In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Is Scary
I was so excited to see SAM, the Kasqian cadet, try to connect with The Doctor! She’s this incredible photonic being who looks like a seventeen-year-old girl, and The Doctor is, well, the original sentient hologram in Starfleet. It was a little disappointing when he turned her down, saying he wasn’t interested in being a mentor. But SAM was prepared! She cleverly mentioned the crew from Star Trek: Prodigy, trying to show him he had mentored before. It was a really cute moment, honestly.
However, to the crew of the Voyager, the young cadets of the Protostar, Dal, Murf, and Captain Gwyndala… your emotional readings are going off the charts…
When I heard Captain Gwyndala’s name, The Doctor totally whirled around and shot a look at SAM. And something was definitely up with the EMH – his sensitivity readings went crazy! It makes me think something really awful happened to Gwyn, Dal, Murf, Rok-Tahk, Zero, Jankom Pog, and Maj’el – I’m seriously worried about them all.
Aaron J. Waltke, a co-executive producer and co-head writer for season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy, explained the reason behind The Doctor’s reaction to Captain Gwyndala’s name and discussed references to Star Trek: Prodigy within Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Threads.

The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy concluded with Gwyndala, a teenager, taking command of the USS Prodigy. Their new task is to explore uncharted areas of space and spread the values of the United Federation of Planets. This mission comes after the devastating attack on Mars in 2385, which forced the Federation to stop exploring and prioritize its defenses.
Unfortunately, Netflix has cancelled Star Trek: Prodigy after two seasons, leaving fans wondering what happens to the USS Prodigy and its crew. A curious moment occurs when the Doctor reacts to SAM mentioning Captain Gwyndala, which is surprising considering the Doctor’s advanced memory allows him to recall events with perfect clarity.
Starfleet Academy Has A Cadet From Star Trek: Prodigy’s Brikar Species
References to Star Trek: Prodigy appear throughout Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. In the first season, episode two of Starfleet Academy, titled “Beta Test,” the new semester begins in San Francisco, and a new cadet is introduced who is a Brikar.
The Brikar are a large, rocky species featured in Star Trek: Prodigy. Rok-Tahk was the first Brikar to ever be accepted into Starfleet Academy. Although it’s unclear how many Brikars joined Starfleet over the following 800 years, a new Brikar cadet at Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is now continuing Rok-Tahk’s pioneering work.
The new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy includes references to Star Trek: Prodigy, highlighting how important that animated show was. This is especially meaningful given how Prodigy was handled by Paramount+. In fact, the character of The Doctor was added to the Starfleet Academy cast because executive producer Alex Kurtzman particularly enjoyed his role as a mentor to the young cadets in Prodigy.
With the launch of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, we can finally learn what happens next with Captain Gwyndala and the USS Prodigy, continuing their story.
