For decades, the Federation has been central to the world of Star Trek, with countless starship crews exploring new regions of the galaxy. Star Trek has given science fiction fans some truly beloved characters, and the story isn’t over yet. This month, the franchise returns with a new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, following a fresh group of aspiring explorers. The latest trailer shows that some well-known characters will also be returning to guide them.
The latest trailer for the new series highlights the next generation of Starfleet students, but also includes memorable quotes from classic Star Trek captains and characters like Kirk, Spock, Pike, Sisko, Janeway, and Picard, along with Worf. While fans might be hoping to see these iconic captains actually appear in the show, it’s unlikely. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set nearly nine hundred years after Star Trek: The Next Generation, so most of these characters would probably no longer be alive. However, one character from the past has been confirmed to return. You can watch the new trailer below.
Starfleet Academy’s Recent Controversy

A major point of discussion surrounding the new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is the character of Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon student played by Karim Diane. Unlike the well-known Worf, Kraag isn’t interested in fighting; he hopes to become a doctor. This is a significant departure for the traditionally warrior-focused Klingon race, but given the time that has passed since Worf’s adventures, it’s a believable evolution.
I was really fascinated by a recent interview with Karim, the actor, where he talked about his character. He pointed out that this Klingon feels different from, say, Worf, and it got me thinking. He actually suggested becoming a doctor isn’t that far off for a Klingon, which is a cool idea! He explained that Klingon society, like any culture really, isn’t just about warriors; healers have always been a part of it, apparently. It’s a neat perspective and makes the character feel more grounded and believable.
Don’t expect to see classic stars like Patrick Stewart and William Shatner in this new Star Trek show, but a familiar face from the Federation will be returning. Robert Picardo is reprising his role as The Doctor, the holographic doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. Because The Doctor was a digital character, it fits that he’s still around for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, though details about his return are still a mystery.
