The Last Starship offers not one, but two captivating elements. Not only does it delve into a legendary event from Star Trek history, but it also resurrects Captain James T. Kirk – a double bonus that any Star Trek comic fan would appreciate!
From the onset, it’s important to disclose that Star Trek has never been my preferred space saga. In discussions pitting Star Trek against Star Wars, I’ve consistently supported the latter. With this bias in mind, I approached “Star Trek: The Last Starship” with a fresh perspective, devoid of extensive Star Trek background, given my limited knowledge of the universe. Yet, this first issue caters to newcomers. While familiarity with The Burn and Captain Kirk’s revival might enrich your reading experience, it is not essential for enjoying the comic.
The creative team skillfully manages to imbue issue #1 of “Star Trek: The Last Starship” with the emotional depth typically found in feature films or TV series. The narrative starts with a tense negotiation by Captain Sato, setting the stage for potential consequences affecting Starfleet and the Federation. Moments of victory are fleeting as they are soon overshadowed by an abrupt turn of events. Portraying the emotional impact of death in a comic is challenging, but “Star Trek: The Last Starship” delivers a palpable sense of fear and sorrow throughout its pages. Additionally, I found the data page incorporated into the “cost of death” discussion particularly engaging.
As a fervent admirer, I must acknowledge the incredible effort poured by the art team into this masterpiece. Their work imbues each scene with palpable drama, as the surviving Starfleet captains engage in heated debates about their next course of action. The intrigue intensifies further when an unforeseen outsider joins the conversation. In some instances, it feels as if the writer gracefully steps back, allowing the art to speak for itself – a testament to the skillful blend of artistry, hues, and shadows that heightens the level of suspense.
In the latest release of Star Trek: The Last Starship #1, Captain Kirk’s resurrection is left a mystery, but the thrilling scenes leading up to it are sure to give long-time fans an exciting rush of emotions. This comic reads and feels like a significant event, and even as the first issue, it promises exciting things to come. I’m optimistic about what’s next!
